4 games with 40+ points allowed
Written by Andy Furman

Of all of the things we have seen this year, the item that is the worst for me personally is allowing 40 points in a single game.  It is a threshold that your defense should rarely permit during a season.  There are not enough possessions or time in the game to normally allow such a thing to occur.  (Think Detroit, a team that has won 2 out of the last 31 contests.  More on that comparison below.)

In the 2009 season, it happened an astonishing FOUR times.  And the followup statistic on history is that this last occurred to the Giants franchise in 1966.  We had to go back 43 years to see this kind of egregious violation of our senses!

We looked at all of the years between 1967 and 2009 to see what the numbers looked like to get some perspective on this metric.

# games/season  with 40+ pts allowed    # of years this occurred between 1967-2009
0 23
1 15
2 2
3 2
4 1

38 out of the past 43 years this franchise allowed zero or one 40 point outbreak.  When we looked at the 4 years where there were 2 or 3 outbreaks, the usual suspects came back to visit.  Remember that post on DSRS, the Defensive Simple Rating System.  It should not surprise you that some of those headliners were the same years.  1971 and 1973, the Alex Webster years of Tarkenton's and the head coach's exit, were the two 3's.  1975 and 2007 were the two 2's.

2007 is interesting.  Week 1 of a brand new defensive coordinator, the team gave up 45 to Dallas.  And the team allowed 41 vs the Vikings, but Eli Manning had telegraphitis and threw 4 picks (three of which were pick 6's for 21 of the 41 points.. not the defense's fault).

091229 40 plus points

What it simply says in conclusion is that the head coach has to be asleep at the switch for something this bad to be happening this many times during a single season.  The Detroit Lions, that sorry sad sack franchise that has yet to even sniff a Super Bowl (let alone win one) has gone 2 seasons with 0-16 and 2-13 records.  They are leading the league this year in points allowed.  In 2008 and 2009 they have given up 40 points in a game 3 times each season.  This is a barometer of dysfunction.

We need a fighter for a DC
written by TrueBlue, December 29, 2009
The image burned into my head is Sheridan staring at his clipboard after each subsequent score like somehow the script was going to change. Lost, solemn, and confused there was no one at his side looking for or offering advice.

Hell, offer Chuckie a job as DC for the Giants. At least you know by his expressions that he was into the game and into his players and for the most part players responded to him.

I want a coaching staff that drives this mentality into its players:

rally round the family
with a pocket full of shells
they rally round the family
with a pocket full of shells

Anything less and it'll be 2009 all over again.
Eric Berry
written by psffur, December 30, 2009
Looks like junior Eric Berry is coming out to go pro next year. Berry is a great talent. He is projected as a top 5 pick if he leaves Tennessee. As of now,he is leaving. He said he wants to play the Chick-filet bowl right here in Atlanta vs Va Tech before talking about next year.
I realize that getting a pick this high is unlikely for us but this kid is exactly one piece of what we need. Kiffin to his credit has advised Eric that he should go pro. He said that in so far as football is concerned he is ready. Reminds me of what Butch Davis said about Nicks and he got that right. Kiffin although young has enough college and pro coaching experience to know of that which he speaks. I live in Atlanta so,I am on this game.
I appreciate how hard and passionately Andy works on this but myself and some others have been on this all year, actually since training camp. The idea is to do something about it.It serves no purpose to say read what Mitch K and Baseball Giants have said all along and taken big hits for their opinions. In the end,Sheridan was a diagnosed cancer in camp. The players arttitude made that apparent. Coughlin in his usual pig headed way refused to acknowledge what was clear and then refused to act all season. Today Coughlin said that Osi is a big part of the future. You could have fooled me and I think Francesa's remark about not having a motor is just bullshit. These talking heads were just as lousy in their analysis during before the season, during the season and now are the first to pounce. We have eyes,we can see,we don't need someone else to tell us how to think!
Defense....what?..... We don't have a defense!
written by Mitch K, December 30, 2009

I am watching the Holiday Bowl tonight. I must admit I do not watch college football regularly. I am very curious to watch Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh. I hear comparisons to Reggie White. I hear "Game Changer", "Unblockable", he is a "once in a generation football player." A top 3 pick for sure, but in essense, the top rated football player in the draft. It is not the Giants style to make a big move up for a player, but if he is...and becomes what everyone says he will...then he is just what this team needs. It fills a glaring need. Our interior line play this season has been abysmal. Good Defense starts up front. Stopping the run, getting to the passer makes the secondary better...we all know this. I'm watching. I want to see for myself if this guy is the goods!

We will be getting a new DC for sure. Yesterday, I threw out a name like Kevin Greene in Green Bay. Not really well thought out on my part. Since I have had a few days off I have looked into this further and I think I have found a better choice. We can look no further than in our division. Washington's coaching staff will be blown up at seasons end and there is a name on that staff who should get a long hard look. Greg Blache has spent 22 years coaching in the NFL. He had been the Skins D-Line coach for 6 seasons and then past 2 years he has been the DC. His teams play strong fundamental football. The Redskins have been a poorly run franchise the last couple of years but they have consistently played good sound defense. He most certainly will get an interview because of the Rooney Rule. Just trying to do my due diligence here.

To TrueBlue...I think Jon Gruden is past the DC phase of his career. If he isn't offered a HC job then he will be comfortable up in the booth.

4 games with 40+ points makes me realize, selecting the next DC will be one of the most important decisions this franchise makes.

Enjoy watching Suh tonight. He is that good--kind of like an athletic Haynesworth.

In retrospect, Sheridan probably should have been in the booth this year. It wouldn't have necessarily made for a different result, but his physical demeanor is not sideline helpful.
Where from here?
written by Motown Blue, December 30, 2009
The vast majority here would love to see a change from away from the Coughlin era but it is safe to say that they will definitely move on from Sheridan. The evidence is overwhelmingly against him and his star DE has hinted that it will be either him or Sheridan who has to go (http://www.nj.com/giants/index..._um_5.html).

Food for thought but the character, or lack there of, has certainly changed since Coughlin took over. Gone are the vocal type A personas of Tiki, Shockey and Strahan. Tiki was forced into retirement by Coughlin, Shockey was shipped out and Strahan took off with the fortunes of a ring. Perhaps he finally has his team of good soldiers and anti-type A players that lack character. I don't recall any players that stood out at the tail end of his era with Jacksonville and remember he had a major say in personnel with them. Nice to have a collection of talented players but they are useless without leaders with fire.

As a I said before perhaps Tisch and Mara will be under the gun to make a change due to the PSL fiasco they created. They've got to fill those seats and generate revenue and may not wish to wait around to see if Coughlin can turn it around for them. It's time for Reese to take ownership and have a Head Coach that he has accountability over.
DC from DC
written by TrueBlue, December 30, 2009
Hey Mitch, I like the idea of stealing Greg Blache away from the Skins. I agree that he has produced a fundamentally sound defensive squad the last couple of years as DC.

FYI, the Gruden reference was mostly in jest but my point was I wanted a DC that had a fire in his belly and didn't look like he was studying for an exam on the sideline. I didn't really think Gruden would become our DC, especially for Coughlin.

Mike Zimmer has done a nice job with Cincinnati the last couple of years. They have become a quality defense and this was a team that was as porous as the Giants were this year. He would be decent.
Looking at Andy's freq chart
written by Roberts, December 30, 2009
We allowed more 40+ points a game this season that during the whole decade from 81-90. That is amazing. Heck one of those years 87 was a strike year, so that shouldn't count.
