Carolina 41 Giants 9
Written by Andy Furman

Michael Strahan at HALFTIME (paraphrased): The Giants are playing with no heart. They are in front of all those former Giants for the last game at Giants Stadium, and with the (lack of) effort they gave, they don't deserve to be in the playoffs!

So there you have it. Even if Dallas somehow loses tonight, loses next week, and the Giants win next week, Michael Strahan said that the Giants do not DESERVE to be in the playoffs.

We'll make this a very short recap.

Good: The game ended.

Bad: The officiating.

Ugly: Everything.

THE LACK OF ENERGY AND PRIDE WAS ENOUGH TO MAKE EVERY SINGLE GIANTS FAN ILL.

The Panthers were injury-riddled, with 11 players on IR.  DeAngelo Williams, Both Offensive Tackles, etc.. etc..etc..  The Panthers are not that good.  The Giants should not be that bad.

This was a terrible day for the Giants and their fans.  The Giants were big favorites and yet they once again UNDERACHIEVED.  They were not ready.  They were without energy.  We looked for a ray of hope from last Monday's win.  We were disappointed.  As soon as the Giants faced a good enough team one game later, the team was promptly put back in its place.  What place is that?  The place where the defense cannot do a lick.  48 Saints, 24 Cards, 40 Eagles, 21 Chargers, 31 Falcons, 26 Broncos, 24 Dallas, 45 Eagles, 12 Redskins, 41 Panthers.  Incredibly, this team has given up 31 points per game over this 10 game stretch.

FOUR.  Count them.  Four games this season the Giants have given up 40+ points in a game this season.  That is not Giants football. Someone find out when was the last time the Giants gave up 40+ points in a season four times.  The last ugly year of Giants football, 2003, 4-12, when the team tanked on Fassel, the defense had ONE game late in the season when they gave up 45 points.  ONE.  This season has FOUR.  Rookie coordinator or not, that is disgusting and disgraceful.  And from a unit that Banks says has ~7 good players on, it is unacceptable.  Expansion teams do not give up 40 points four times a season.  The Texans in 2002 NEVER gave up 40 points.

We talked about Cofield spinning it positive for the rookie coordinator, that Sheridan was improving.  The answer today, just two weeks after the defense got throttled for 45 at the hands of the Eagles, was to give up another 41 to the Panthers.  Sheridan is obviously not making his case to be brought back.

We were fair to Gilbride this week.  And as much as I'd like to assign blame to him, I actually will not in this game.  It was not his fault that the refs made some horrible calls that took away a TD and A LOT OF MOMENTUM.  It was not his fault that Manningham fumbles away a good opening drive.  We lost some of that crisp playcalling, but this loss was not on him.  The entire team played with lack of energy and packed it in as soon as the 1st half onslaught got into gear. I'll just speak for myself and say that you have to blame Tom Coughlin for this kind of wholesale embarrassment.  Where is the evidence of that?  In a quote provided by Buck and Aikman during the game, Coughlin made an admission that was as horrid as it was candid: "Until we put back to back wins together, I don't know what we are going to have on Sunday."  If the head coach does not know what he is going to have on Sunday, isn't that an indictment?  Those are the coach's words, not mine.

today was an embarrassment ON ALL LEVELS....against a team we had every reason to beat...out of all the butt kickings we have absorbed this year, this butt kicking was the most inexplicable...
Giants 1966 Season
written by Duke, December 27, 2009
Andy go back to the Giants 1966 season and you will see they gave up not 4 games but 5 games over 45 points and they gave up 501 points in a 14 game season, they were horrible and Allie Sherman still stayed with a 1-12-1 record
WHAT A JOKE!!!
written by Mitch K, December 27, 2009
This team has no leadership. Coughlin admits not having a read on this team. Then what in the hell are the Giants paying you for? The burden now falls on ownership. They have to evaluate and rid themselves of this coaching staff. All of them!!! That's right all of them. The honeymoon is over Coughlin. In a game of so much importance, this team comes out like that? It is incomprehensible to me. Carolina's O-Line blew our D-Line out of stadium. And the way we tackle? All I saw was "Grab...Grab...Grab!" to quote Vince Lombardi.

Andy, I know you gave Gilbride a pass today, but I do not. Carolina shut down the run and we were one dimensional. You can't win that way. I knew it was too good to be true that Gilbride finally figured it out. I know we had a bad break on the first drive, but we went 3 and out on the next possession. This team is not mentally tough, they couldn't fight out of adversity. Atlanta went down to New Orleans 17-0 today....and what did they do? They tied it in regulation 17-17 and then won in OT. You would think we could have fought out of that deficit today. NO! All we did was go through the motions. This team should be embarrassed to wear the uniform. They don't deserve to be called Giants. And Coughlin...you and your staff can pack your bags as well. I know deep down the Giants will not fire TC...I just know it. But, really they should. Are you listening Mr. Mara & Mr. Tisch?
Chemistry
written by psffur, December 27, 2009
I just have one thing to say. This team lacls chemistry. From the top down this was apparent in camp. There was bickering in public,Osi walked on a practice etc. This continued all season. There is a big problem on the defensive side of the ball and you just can't blame it all on injuries.
Osi has gone from pro-bowler to injured to has been in two years. Well,I am not buying into it. Osi was and is a class act. For him to walk out of practice was a huge red flag. Andy was right about the kind of injury he sustained and shame on those who have so easily given up on this guy. He is a world class pass rusher. He has proven that. He is not big enough to go head on with the big guys and he needs some schemes to let him play his game. Obviously,Spags "got it" and Sheridan and Coughlin don't. Most good teams have at least one guy who they try and free to go get the quarterback. The Giants have several such players yet they were almost invisible. I am referring to "Kiwi" and Osi and Tuck who is actually a D-end. These are not the big trees. The big trees, the guys who snuff the run are 320 pounds, some more. The Packers drafted Raji as an example an he has clogged the middle. This allows the d-ends to go for it.
As Andy said,it is just crushing to see our Giants stink on D. We are all about D. We have never been the best on offense but we have alwys been amongst the best on D. I am talking about when we are good. It is Giant tradition which is who we are.
Osi's comment at the end of the game is telling. He says he won't be a Giant next year. Now,something is going on that has taken a pro-bowl,quiet,productive man and ruined him. This cannot stand. Osi played 5,count em,5 plays today. The Giant defense got routed. You want to blame Osi? Whatever else they do the Giants need to fix the moral problem fast.Unless Osi is damaged beyond repair then it's not his fault! This is the same guy who sacked Donavon Mc Nabb 5 times in one game and was amongst the league leaders just two seasons ago.He says he is healthy and maybe not perfect but healthy enough to help any team.He sacked and he ran down the backs who challenged his territory. I believe if it was injuries Osi would own up to it. Every good team runs stunts, schemes, game plans to free their best. That's what good coaches do. I hate to see a guy who I respect and who has given it all take this kind of beating. Is it possible that Sheridan went away from what what we do best? Well,Kiwi had a bad year too. He was an excellent sacker when played correctly. So,two of your best become invisible. Your defense is a laughing stock and you do nothing.

Final game; all stars homecoming. BIG deal. 41-9.
NO coaching, NO pride, NO guts, mediocre ability. AND 2,000 unsold seats in NEW YORK. That last point should wake up the comatose owners.

I am stunned that this team did not show up for such a important game. And got badly beaten in a critical game at home by a crippled team.

This is a wholesale indictment of the coaching staff. TC has totally and admittedly lost this team. Sherbrown is a total joke as a coach. Never has a NYG coaching staff accomplished so little with so much talent.

This was a total embarrassment by a team with no pride, no heart, and no fortitude, and that comes from a coaching staff that has completely lost its team. Here's hoping they get smoked the final game as well; it will give Reese incentive to get rid of Sheridan, Gilbride, and hopefully Coughlin as well.
Odor on the field
written by Leonbrightfan, December 27, 2009
This team has been a disappointment since the end of last season, when they phoned it in against the Eagles. They have no leadership, an inconsistent offense and the worst defense they've had in decades. Sheridan should be fired tomorrow, and the lamebrain nitwit Jerry Reese should be right behind him. Thy won't be good next year or the year after. Watch the Jets surpass them in NYC interest moving forward.

Don't make it personal. You like Osi, I don't. There is no shame here.

If Osi is a big a talent as you say he is that would come thru. Tuck is in the same bad system and you can see his ability. Many many times this year Osi had a one on one and he didn't beat his man. That's on him, not Bill.
Yes, i completly agree that a good system would make him a better player but to put the blame all on the coaching staff is unfair. What I do blame the coaching staff for is not getting the players
1)Ready to play mentally
2)Ready to play emotionally
With that said, the players are adults and well paid so why don't they bring it every week but as we know, that is pie in the sky wishful thinking.

the gmen are done for 2009. incredibly inconsistent year. i know there were lots of injuries on the defense throughout the year, but they were horrible when it came to allowing points. most importantly, they didn't stop the teams when they had to. extremely disappointing season. quite surprised.
eli is classy. should coughlin go.
written by irishmacmystic, December 27, 2009
just listened to eli and coughlin press conference on giant web site...it is hard not to like eli, he is a very classy guy, and i believe we will win another super bowl with him...and if he has won two or more by he time he has retired his contract is fine by me.....

i know probably 90% of giant fans would vote to fire gilbride and sheridan....with respect to coughlin, do we give him another year based on the fact that he won a super bowl only two years ago? do all of you attribute the last super bowl win to spags (in terms of coaching) or do you give credit to coughlin and gilbride for that as well? would the giant hierarchy ever become proactive enough to keep coughlin with the caveat that gilbride and sheridan have to go? i am not necessarily a coughlin supporter (especially struggling with that today), but i think great care should be taken before firing a guy who won us a super bowl in the recent past.........i suspect i am in the minority at this point but throwing it out there for discussion

I think Spags and internal team leadership, ie Strahan and a huge amount of luck won us a superbowl. If the Dallas O-lineman, i forget his name, doesn't get hurt in the second half we don't beat Dallas. The fact that we played for a FG win at the end of the GB Championship game is enough for me to want TC fired. If Brett does not gift wrap a pic at the beginning of OT Tyree might not ever have gotten the chance to make history.
Last year we had one of the great teams in Giants history for 10 games. One guy goes down and we are done. I can see if it was an LT but it was not. Plax was great but not that great.
Agree about Eli. If he was just more accurate he would be an all time great. Not as good as his brother who, in my opinion, when he is done, might be the greatest QB to ever have played the game.

Not much to say that hasn't been said. Once again, the Giants weren't ready to play. That's the head coach. Whether this is enough to make the Giants fire him remains to be seen.

What a pathetic pill to swallow. Blaach.
I tried to be optimistic...
written by yTedK, December 27, 2009
But no, not showing up in this type of game = the last straw. Fire Coughlin and Sherbrown and Gilbrown. Bring in a new coach, maybe Cowher, and let him hire new coordinators and then pick and choose whether any of the existing coaching staff, position coaches, etc are worthy of staying. Coughlin has lost this team.

As has been said, with this many good players on the team, there's no longer any excuse for this. And I sure hope Osi is a Giant next year. He is an excellent Giant and a class act.
No Offense taken
written by psffur, December 27, 2009
Capt,
we don't agree on some stuff but hey,I am always open to listen. How do you explain Osi making the pro-bowl and the season he had just two years ago? What was it 15 sacks? I just think it's pitiful to tear a man down who played on a Super Bowl team,is all-pro and is trying to come back from arguably the most serious injury one can get. I consider it refreshing and heroic that he would work so hard and come back in 1 year. The injury didn't heal itself. It takes grueling, painful, rehab to heal. He had just signed a contract so,he could just collect a check. The injury is a whole lot worse than a hamstring pull which kept Canty out for most of the season. I admit I am sensitive to what I believe is scape goating.Osi and the Giants performed under Spags. He,like the Eagles then and the Eagles today live and die by the blitz. It worked. He was the difference that brought us the ring. I am talking the obvious. Strahan is a great Giant and a future hall of famer. If you think back however, you might consider that he took camp off, played like crap for the first 7 games and caught fire when the team got rolling. He had just gotten out of a costly divorce and the money was a big motivating factor. He was a truly great player who was playing out the string. As with truly great players his competitive spirit and leadership took over when the Giants started to win. Least we forget, Strahan too was a vocal critic of Tom Coughlin.
I am not looking for bad guys per se and there are No heroes when you play like this. Well, Ahmad Bradshaw may be the exception. He was heroic all year. Canty and Bernard come here for big bucks and don't contribute anything. You would think they might bring some veteran leadership. So,what's different about this team and the team that won the big one? I submit it was Spags blitzing defense and the way his guys played for him. You hear Coughlin, you don't hear Sheridan and you never hear Gilbride. This team lost it's soul.
I also think Eli Manning is a great kid. I don't know how well he might play with good coaching,an offense playing to his and the teams strengths and one that could out think the opposition. Gilbride never changes. He's been in the league forever. He is the same year after year after year. Anyone remember the grief I took when I said Ryan was turning the Jets? Anyone remember what I said about Josh McDaniels? I surely can be wrong but did you see how well the Broncos played in Philly. They came back and lost it in overtime. At least they showed up.They are better.
I dont want to say I told you so if Osi leaves and plays even close to his potential but forgive me if I take Demarcus Ware's opinion over yours. He said just two weeks ago that Osi is a great player. I think I'll go with Ware.
Terrible...
written by The Mayor, December 27, 2009
In all honesty, with the exception of a couple fluke plays last year to win the Carolina game. Carolina has consistently had our number. John Fox has always had us dialed up. I was nervous about this game heading into it. We were banged up and so were the Panthers. Its also bad luck and a tough schedule to run into the Panthers when they were on a hot streak with a fresh qb. Lets hope they win next week and we lose and get the pick ahead of them in next years draft. The officiating was piss poor. It was apparent the Giants already sold a shit ton of X Mas Gear and Carolina probably sold nothing. NFL tries to gear shit towards small market teams that are in danger of losing their fan base. And as always the Anti-NY sentiment and fact that NY Giant fans are loyal long time fans no matter the case doesn't bode well for us when it comes to officiating.

My old man says we need a black coach or black quarterback to get the calls. Is that racist? Maybe. Not saying I agree with him. But it is a good point. He also claims the only reason we made it to the superbowl and didn't get the usual raw deal on calls during that run is because Jerry Reese is black. Its an interesting point. He backs up his argument with the Steelers whom turned down Grimm and Wisenhunt for Tomlin. And look at the calls the Steelers got last year on their run. He may be on to something or maybe its a conspiracy theory.

All I know is officiating or not we got our asses kicked today. We had no heart. And we do not have one leader or fiery player on our defense. Pierce was the only one who could instill will and fire the guys up. I bitched about Pierce's physical skills but he did have heart. Something noone on the current Giants' Roster possessed today with the exception of Bradshaw (playing with two sprained ankles and a broken foot). Jacobs is the biggest bust, running for a contract last year, and pussy footed this year all year long. The only game he ran hard was the one against Philly when he fumbled. Then he got mad showed heart and ran like a mad man. Where is that guy? Gone! We need to get a dynamic running back this year in the draft (hopefully Jahvid Best the cal running back) along with linebackers(maybe trade up for weatherspoon or hopefully get a high enough pick for Sergio Kindle (UT) or Brandon Spikes (Fla) and a strong cover cornerback/safety.

Today's showing was truly pathetic and inept, the holding call on Hedgecock, non pass interference call on Boss, and the subsequent Manningham fumble was a microcosm for this shitbox waste of a season. And Snowy I can guarantee you I couldn't stomach to watch the game after the 3rd quarter and turned that shit off and went to return some holiday gifts instead.

My prediction, Coughlin stays and so does Gilbride but Sheridan for sure gets fired. No doubt about it.
...
written by Capt George, December 28, 2009
I don't think it is lack of heart. I believe our team, like other giants teams of the near past can't take adversity. As soon as something goes wrong, they fold.
Pete
As far as explaining Osi, i put him in the same category as Emmit Smith, above average player with a great Oline in front of him, same for Joe Morris. I think the same thing can be said for Tom Brady. I was watching the highlights today and Boomer from ESPN was saying, as Brady was standing in the pocket with all day to throw, "He is so great." Put guys falling all over him and then let me see him make those throw year after year. Osi was a product of Strahan and schemes
...
written by ultimatenyg, December 28, 2009
Re Osi, both of you are seeing it properly, if it is possible. Not black or white, but a shade of grey. Osi was a special player, but Strahan demanded more of him. When Strahan was on the field they almost always ran away from him, which meant that Osi was getting a steady does of run on his end which he had no choice but to handle. You didn't have to be a rocket scientist to connect the dots and figure out that Strahan was the general out there on the field who demanded Osi get it done. Who is demanding it from Osi out on the field now? We all know about the ligament damage from last year. Add Sheridan's weaker schemes, LBers who have not helped. Osi is a very talented pass rusher who makes phenomenal impact plays with his sack strip score trifectas, but he needs 10 other guys and a coaching staff to help him do his job. A guy like this is part of the answer- this is a guy who Cowher will know how to leverage. This is a guy who is part of the underachievement right now who will achieve again. I sure hope it is with the Giants.
Basic Blocking and Tackling
written by OGCT, December 28, 2009
TC is not the problem, the players are the problem. You get rid of TC and replace with anyone other than a Bill Cower and you can expect 5 wins or less. The problem with the Giants is something that is lacking across professional sports in general - heart. Since the creation of free agency a player can basically say, "you know what, we lost. this team isn't going to get me a ring. i think i'll bounce." with the players getting younger and younger (ie more immature) and owners spending rediculous amounts of money to have said players come to their team...why would you have heart? what's the motivation? I see heart in college games but I saw jack yesterday. After their "win" over Atl, after their defense was OWNED but a sub par running game I said their season was over. And when you have a secondary (riddled with injuries or not) that gets LIT UP like they did last night and then start jawing at the CAR receivers on national television after FINALLY making a tackle i'm sorry but you don't have the right to wear that jersey. Firing TC isn't going to change that. You need to get rid of his supporting cast or at least have a MAJOR house cleaning in the off season. Carson and LT....must have felt sick to their stomachs. I know i did....
...
written by Sect 122, December 28, 2009
Seriously, Mayor that is such a close-minded, idiotic racist outlook. Your "old-man" should be ashamed of himself.

Watching Jonathan Stewart yesterday it was never more apparent that we need a running back who can do it all. We have a Goldie Locks running back scenario, one is too big, one is too small, hopefully we can draft one that is "just right". Defense should come first in this draft. We have seen first hand what one under the radar Cal prospect has done to the NFC East, maybe we can take Best and have a game breaker of our own.

No way the Giants fire TC, we'll give him another year, fire Sheridan. They'll put us through the same agony as this year, finish somewhere around .500, then give TC the axe. At which point in time it will be an "off year" for coaching candidates and we'll end up w/ some boob like Dom Capers. Or as far as the Mayor is concerend, we'll hire Sindey Portier so we can get calls.
