Let us be Giants- A song about the 2009 season

Let us be Giants.  A song about the 2009 season...
Words by Andy Furman

"Let us be Giants we'll marry our fortunes together"
"I've got some Super Bowls here in my bag"
So we bought a Boley and a Canty and Mrs. CC Brown
And we walked off to look for XLIV

"Tom," I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Denver
"Glendale seems like a dream to me now"
It took me four days to hitchhike from Jersey
I've gone to look for Spagnuolo

Laughing at the Bucs
Playing games with the Chiefs
He said the QB in the Raiders suit was a joke
I said "Be careful the Saints are really a contender"

"Toss me a scheme, I think there's one in Sheridan"
"We used the last one a season ago"
So I looked at the Defense, he read his Hanlon excuses
And the blood rose over an open field

"Gilbride, he's lost," I said, though I knew Tom was sleeping
We're empty and aching and we sure know why
Counting the losses on the New Jersey Turnpike
We've all gone to look for the NY Giants
All gone to look for the NY Giants
All gone to look for the NY Giants

No, I'm not giving up my day job to become a songwriter, but I really want to thank Josh Freeburn for doing such a good job on the song. He played ALL of the musical instruments himself and then sang too.
Disappointment

How in the world did Bill Sheridan lose his defense? Well my friends, it's very simple, he's not a fire and brimstone kinda guy. There is no inspirational leader on the defense and it shows. Perhaps the loss of AP hurt them in that department. When they were down 10-0 someone had to step up and make a play. The defense just didn't show up. Where the hell were they?
There wasn't a fire and brimstone guy there. No Strahan,...

But of course, there's a question. "Who knows?" Those two words could be applied to ideas like, "Who knows if Bill Sheridan will be back next year?" I don't believe so. Tom Coughlin is a winning coach but not a great one. And as long as he has a Manning on his team, he'll always have the potential to be. He'll be back but Bill Sheridan won't. Gilbrown will be back especially because of how throughout several games this season, the offense was able to put up points. After all, Eli had a career year in touchdowns and yardage. Hell, if Eli throws for a 115 more yards (give or take) next week, he'll be over the 4,000 yard mark as well. Gilbrown will be back.
Osi will probably not be back. I'm unsure of this one but I get the sense that he's frustrated with not being a starter. Perhaps a new defensive coordinator will settle him a bit. He's a remarkable talent when he's not recovering from knee surgery.
Coming into the season, Justin Tuck had something wrong with his feet/leg and it required surgery to fix. He opted not to have the surgery and to play through the season. In week 2 he seriously hurt his left shoulder when some douche tripped him (Flozell Adams). I believe that this off season he'll choose to have surgery on his ailments.

Where the Giants go from there,... "Who knows?"

I love the lyrics. All gone to look for the NY Giants.

I still cannot believe what transpired on Sunday versus Carolina as well as the 2009 season.

The Giants have hit rock bottom. Speaking of rock bottom, I was at the infamous Fumble game. The Fumble game was the lowest point in Giants history. If the Giants can recover from that mess, they can get out of their current funk.

One Giants opinion...
written by Mitch K, December 28, 2009

“I’m not saying that they don’t have pride, but I don’t see where the pride is coming from,” Giants legend Harry Carson told the Daily News’ Tim Smith after today’s game. “Wellington Mara always said, ‘Once a Giant, always a Giant.’ And guys who have played here have a certain sense of pride that we have to adhere to. I don’t necessarily see that same pride amongst the guys who are here now.”

btw...nice job with the lyrics Andy
Power Point by Tom Coughlin.....
written by Mitch K, December 28, 2009

Saturday night Tom Coughlin is showing graphs to his 53 man roster explaining how the Giants after blowout wins the past few years play poorly the following week.

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME????

This is how our leader inspires his team. Power Point presentations. Not very Knute Rockne is it? Hey Tom...did you ever think that the games following blowout wins came under your watch?

This loss, this season is on Coughlin.

The last 10 games the Giants were 3-7. He didn't circle the wagons. He never rallied his troops. But let's not just limit this to him. The players are to be held accountable. Jonathan Stewart, their 3rd string RB runs for 206 yds with an injured hamstring. Steve Smith (#89) breaks his arm but still finds his way into the end zone. These players had nothing to play for but pride.
(See my earlier entry on Harry Carson )

How many players on our team want it like that? I can name them on one hand. My team should have 53 of them!

Back to TC...

He has picked 5 Coordinators during his regime. By my scorecard he is batting .200 Sorry, not good enough, He is at the "Mendoza Line" That doesn't cut it. He doesn't deserve to pick anymore.

Graphs!!! You are showing graphs!!!! The game has passed you by.

The Giants deserve a Head Coach with a tough, defensive mentality.

Graphs!!! I can't believe he is showing graphs to the troops...THAT IS INSANE!!!
Hopefully, this is the Beginning,...... not the end

Many times in sports, politics, & history, major failures trigger actions that bring about huge reversals.

After this disaster, management now has the emotional incentive to rebuild the NYG. They're pissed off too. It would have been a lot more difficult to rebuild if we had made the playoffs.....a false promise.

It really won't take much to make this team a real playoff contender. Fire Sherbrown, TC should really go too. I don't like Gillbrown, but he will stay due to the O's overall performance in 2009. The O is basically sound if we add a solid OT.

The D will need a rock solid DT, new MLB, OLB and 2 safetys.

We'll do it and I predict the NYG will win the NFC in 2011.

again, my son's idea: bring back Fox and tell him he's the HC when Coughlin's contract retires in two years.

there's no way the gmen fire coughlin. they probably shouldn't either. I was calling for his head during the playoff blowout to the panthers a couple years ago, but he came back the next year and adjusted. Gilbride may just get a HC look somewhere - the offense was not the problem this year.
There are some obvious positions the Gmen need to address during the offseason, either through the draft or FA: LB, OL, S. Another that people will hop on the band wagon for: DT. And two that will fly under the radar but I wouldn't be suprised to see Reese address: RB and CB. LB, OL and S were concerns going into last year's draft, but I really thought we had solid players in at RB and CB. This year has really made me question that.

Francesa ripped the Giants top to bottom. Good. Callers were ripping the Giants and Francesa let them go as far as they wanted. Any adjective and adverb you wanted to use, Francesa let you go as far as you wanted. HORRIBLE, PATHETIC, anything you wanted to use.

Francesa said very few players' jobs are safe. Sheridan is gone, he left Gilbride's fate in Eli's hands, saying that he would ask Eli if he wanted Gilbride and let that decide that. Francesa says he is "not a Gilbride guy."

In ripping the defense, Francesa said you know it is a very bad sign when a Defensive Back (Terrell Thomas) is the leading tackler this season.

I have never seen Francesa like this, but it was VERY REFRESHING because at least he sees the anger and frustration we have been going through these past 10 weeks. The PALPABLE UNDERACHIEVEMENT.

And this breaking word, John Fox and his staff at Carolina are having their contracts honored another year. (Cowher not going to Carolina.)

Francesa not an Osi fan at all.. "big contract, low motor."

He says the only players on defense who are safe are Tuck, Kiwanuka and Phillips. (I like Thomas and Webster added to that list.)

Too many bigger holes to fill (S, DT, MLB, OLB) and we're "relatively" good at CB with Webster and Thomas. Webster had some bad moments, but overall he had a solid year. Thomas had a similar year.

I also think we're relatively Ok at RB with a healthy # 44, D. Ware, and don't forget Andre Brown on IR. I'm not sure at all about Jacobs. He seems to have lost it.

The D was our big weakness this year, and the D must get the priority. Starting with firing Sherbrown.

You know,we are never all going to agree on everything and that's good. It makes you think. That's why come draft time the teams pull in all their scouts for an intense critique of what they have said. See, in a good organization it takes a lot of people to get it right and it is critical that you can trust all of your people.
I like Reese. He made his bones the hard way. He is from the scouting side and he was good at it. I believe that he knew he had problems. I think his first draft was as good as it gets. The Giants picked low and still had 8 guys make the roster. The fact that eight guys could do that means that we were really thin everywhere.I know that I loved Steve Smith and it strikes me as lunacy that anyone can slam a guy who broke most of the Giants receiving records and has 99 receptions on a terrible team with one to go. The job the Giants have done at receiver is awesome. They totally rebuilt the unit in two years. Imagine if Plax had a brain.
It's tough to draft in the low twenties every year and get players who are going to be impact guys. Reese isn't stupid. He knew he was going to lose Strahan and he knew that the Giants had one of those years you almost never see. They knew they had linebacker problems which is why the made the Kiwi switch. They knew they had problems at d.b. and as they did at receiver last year they addressed those problems(2 years). I still think the guys they have are good players. Ross,Webster, phillips,Johnson, and Johnson can play. They are all kids and it takes awhile to learn at this level. They need another player(the kid from U.S.C. is fabulous and the next coming of Ronnie Lot. The other Rolle out of Florida State too a year because he got a rhodes,a rhodes and took it.He wants to be a neuro-surgeon AFTER his pro career! This is a great talent and a unique kid. He will be available and he can do it. He is better than his brother who is damn good.
So,Reese is left with an aging o-line,an aging and shaky linebacker corps,no receivers and big problems on the d-line. He takes care of the receivers, drafts Sintim and Beatty to begin that rebuilding process and then committs a bunch of free agent blunders. He tries for a quick fix on d and buys Canty,Bernard and Boley. Bernard is a joke,Canty is a huge disappointment and Boley hardly plays. The point is,the Giants won that Super bowl with mirrors. It was amazing to watch and one of the biggest upsets in HISTORY. All of a sudden we are great with the same players, the same problems and we have lost Strahan and Osi. Our horrible coaching staff which was about to be fired takes the ride. It was a miracle guys,a miracle and we bought into it rather than appreciating the moment. Oh yeah, we got a brilliant young coordinator but he left too. In the end we were an emperor with no clothes. It was a moment to savior,to always remember but it was a moment! It was like the 69 Mets, just like that. We bought into a fantasy experience,we lived a dream but it was inevitable that we would wake up.
The Giants have a lot of very good talent. There is no reason to think that we cannot build a really good team. If Reese is the real deal we are only a year or two away.
Coughlin is still the same coach who was an inch from being fired and so is Gilbride. The same guys. Spags has come and gone and Sheridan is a cancer to this team. There is a future but only if we take our heads out of our asses and dissect what actually happened. Of course Plaxico didn't help. The guy was a super talent ala Owens but like the later he had a grapefruit for a brain. That's always hard to take.
So,here we are at a crossroads. We need to sweep out the coaches and Reese needs to keep up his drafting. If that happens there is no reason why we can't build what we all want,a team that makes us proud and does it for the long haul.

yes, i agree that those positions (LB, DT, S and I would include OL) are bigger problems - I'm just saying that RB (Brown looked great in preseason, but if he returns from a ruptured achilles as the same player that would be a miracle + Jacobs performing below standards + coaching staff doesn't seem to trust Ware + Bradshaw's injuries) and CB (Ross's injuries + Webster injury & down year + Dockery seems not to be trusted + B. Johnson: good but what is his ceiling?) may be surprise positions that Reese addresses.

You're right about 2007 and the SB. We had a team of overachievers and a great D line who played the games of their lives 4 times in a row. Strahan's contribution on and off the field was immense. He was the real MVP

Later, the fans and the NY media started taking 2007 for granted, and started thinking dynasty, not realizing it was a miracle. The critics who said it could not be repeated were right. It was over when Strahan retired. TC was lucky as hell to be there.
Losing Spags was a dagger in the heart.

Having been a NYG fan since the days of Y.A Tittle,
I really savored the 2007 playoffs. The NFC Championship on the frozen tundra of Green Bay was really special for me, having watched the NYG of old, beaten under the same frigid conditions by Bart star and Paul Hornung. That would have been enough for me. Winning the SB was an incredible bonus. I watched the reruns of those games 20 times.

I do think we have a excellent core to move forward with. The O is solid, just add a T and a G. We could have 2 Pro Bowl caliber WR's next year. Nicks is only 21 years old, with great potential. Manning is just entering his prime.

The D must be rebuilt, but we're starting with 6-7 very good players. We need the continued support of the owners to clean out, and aggressively go into free agency. I really feel TC has lost it & must go. Sherbrown is a disaster, and is TC's responsibility. TC's comments the past few days tell it all.

It's all up to JR. I still have confidence in him.

I believe the NYG will win the NFC in 2011.

Sorry but i completely disagree, the 2008 season saw one of the great giants teams for the first 10 games. If plax does not shot himself, we are a 2peat. I think the defense held the eagles in the playoff loss to 35 yards in first half. If Eli could throw even a little in the wind or Gilbrown had a brain we might have overcome Plax and that was without Stra and Osi. To say 2008 was a just a mirage is, in my opinion just not correct.

I agree with your assessment of 2008 Capt George. That defense was awesome for Spags and when the offense was clicking with Plaxico, it was hard to beat us.
The fact that our OC and HC could not adjust to the loss of Plaxico was testiment to Plaxico's talent and the OC and HC not knowing how to optimize the rest of the talent on the offense. We all agreed we should have been able to make adjustments to beat the Eagles in the playoffs and yet there were no adjustments. We had already beaten the two teams that went to the Superbowl. But the limitations of our OC and HC prevented us from having the opportunity to win another championship.

How about that draft talk you had started in the 'Hope and Objectivity' post a couple of days ago? Could use some of that now to take my mind off of the horrific game witnessed yesterday.

I'll have to work on my knowledge of who's who in the college game as I honestly haven't spent the time I would like looking at the talent pool. Witherspoon's a beast you say?! I like the sound of having that type of player at LB again.

O.K. Capt,
I can't do any better. Do you mean 2007 or 08? If the numbers on defense this year, the stats don't do it for you than what's the point? If you want to call 08 a success,so be it but,I saw a team that collapsed after a nice run that could just as easily been 3-2 after the first 5. No one can argue 3-7 in the last 10. Bob sees it as I do. I remember it as he does. Perhaps,it's global warming, perhaps,it's early Alzheimer's but whatever it is we both got it. Francesa has an opinion,Bob has one,Mitch K. has one,you have one,Andy has one, baseball giants has one, wonder has one as do the other guys. We do have one thing in common. We bleed blue.I don't think anyone comments without thinking and that is to be respected. No matter. There is a commercial running with Herm Edwards. You know, one of those beer things. In it he says "it's about winning games, nothing else matters,it's about winning". This is more than a game for most of us. It is a year long obsession, year after year. One always shoots for an 07 but the eighties was heaven for me. I saw my team grab George Young and Parcells and I watched them rebuild my childhood. It was a unique time in my football life. I loved Parcells and then I hated him. He did it in N.Y.,New England,New York again and his seat in the hall is just waiting. I hope George get's there too. I saw Harry Carson,Banks,L.T.,Strahan and my heroes on Sunday.I prefer to think about them.
It will take awhile to get over this year. I am going to try and think about the possibilities. I will play G.M. in my head and make my own evaluations,my own strategy but I will always remember my hero's No one can debaterthat as it is all mine.

2008

I'd like to weigh in on this discussion as well. Not to sound wishy washy...but Capt. George, TrueBlue & Pete are all right here to a certain degree. We started off so strongly in '08. I was certain we were the best team that season. As True Blue states, "the limitations of our OC and HC prevented us from having the opportunity to win another championship." I agree with that 100%. That was where the problem was. We still had a dominating defense, we had the #1 rushing team. But, we never overcame the loss of Plaxico. That was on Coughlin and Gilbride. We actually beat the eventual participants in the Super Bowl.

Pete feels it was not successful because, "but,I saw a team that collapsed after a nice run."... he too is correct because in reality that trend continued into this season and 2009 became a bitter disappointment.

This team needs to retool the O-Line, draft a top running back, Get some DT's who will plug the run defense up the middle and create a push up front, we need aggressive fast LB's, we need safety help for sure. We also need to replace Tynes, not so much for his inconsistent field goal percentage, but just as importantly the need for deeper kickoffs. Bring in a punter to challenge Feagles. That sounds like a lot...Can't wait to see how this "Uncapped" year will help us retool.

Right on the money Mitch.

Now what do we address first?

Depending on where we ultimately draft, I like the prospect of grabbing a run stuffer to shore up the middle of our defense as well but we've always looked at free agency to fill that need with 4-year veterans coming off contract.
That means we would have to look at LB and OT in my estimation. As bad as I think we need an LB, I like the idea of getting another high end OT that could potentially start at RT and move Beatty to LT and Diehl to LG. I haven't looked at who will be available in free agency but I would think we look for a safety as well given how bad we were when Phillips went down. That would allow us to draft a LB or two and maybe even come back to the O-line or RB in the fourth. Any chance the Giants trade away Osi? What about signing Peppers? This would depend on whether Sheridan stays or goes - if he stays, God help us, Osi and probably many others will revolt.
