Saints, Simms and Concussions

1) We hope this is obvious.  But after what Sharper and the Vikings did to Eli in 2005 and 2007, please protect the ball and do not telegraph.  Look that old man off to the other side and you will have one less player to worry about.  If you look him off SOME OF THE TIME, it will create another half second of doubt what your true intentions are with the ball.  Is the QB looking me off or is he going there?  Given he has already lost a step, he is then finished.  No more INTs.  As much as Sharper is a hero vs the likes of Kolb and Sanchez (and Kitna and Manning in 2007, see the pattern???!!!), he can be rendered inert by Eli simply by not giving that centerfielder any help.  Eli has the experience to do that.  All he needs to do is remember.

2) On Wednesday, The NY Times Fifth Down posted the section from this blog which noted the TE has led the opposing team's offense in receptions.  Our point was that the Giants needed an answer for the TE (Shockey, who we noted has lost a half step because of cumulative injuries) in single coverage because we lack players with range.  Some of the commenters went into a huff about not needing to worry about Shockey, but they missed the point.  One commenter, Ian, noted:

It’s not the catches n yards of Shockey that u guys should be worried about but rather the space and voids his presence creates for others. If u saw the saints/eagles game they went to him 3 straight plays for 48 yards n it forced the safeties to come down n then Colston got over top of them for Td.

If Ian wants to, he can write for this blog, because he said it better than I did.  We spent the time trying to brainstorm on how to handle the TE in single coverage because it was obvious from our track record that we were not doing a particularly great job there in covering TEs.  (This dates back to 2007, incidentally... I still have mild twitching when I remember Pierce pretending to cover Watson in the Super Bowl.)  Once you are exposed by the TE in single coverage, the issues that Ian refers to kick in.  All of a sudden the TE is a problem now because he pulls someone else over, and then Brees goes to where the other person was pulled FROM.  Peyton Manning and Drew Brees are THAT GOOD.  This is how they pass for 4000+ yards each year, like drinking a glass of water.  So if you have AN ANSWER for the TE, it makes a tighter ship.  We think we have the answer for Colston in Corey Webster.  Boley would have been perfect to tag on Bush.  Brees is going to isolate matchups in ways that the green units of WASH, TB, KC and OAK simply could not do.  Brees is going to get points on you.  The only question is how often.  If you have an answer for the TE, it will be LESS OFTEN.  The difference between OFTEN and LESS OFTEN is winning and losing in the NFL.  (These past three games it was the difference between 'less often' and 'not at all'... that is the best way to sum up the offense we face on Sunday.)

3) Very good link to an article passed along by Dick B. from the New Yorker on the lasting effects of NFL head injuries.  Read the first part on Kyle Turley.  I skipped the second (and other interspersed) paragraph on the Vick dog stuff.  Then it goes back to more medical discussion of brain damage, which I quite honestly found uncomfortable to read:

“There is something wrong with this group as a cohort,” Omalu says. “They forget things. They have slurred speech. I have had an N.F.L. player come up to me at a funeral and tell me he can’t find his way home. I have wives who call me and say, ‘My husband was a very good man. Now he drinks all the time. I don’t know why his behavior changed.’ I have wives call me and say, ‘My husband was a nice guy. Now he’s getting abusive.’ I had someone call me and say, ‘My husband went back to law school after football and became a lawyer. Now he can’t do his job. People are suing him.’ ”

The NFL needs to remove any player with a concussion for an extended period of time.  And if he suffers a second concussion in a season, he needs to be placed on IR for the remainder of the season.  Mandatory, no exceptions.  And if that does not help, start penalizing players that hit the head 25 yards.  Yes, 25 yards. After reading this article, you'll think that 25 yards for a person's life is a joke, not enough.  We all love this sport, but guys are literally getting killed out there.

4) On Wednesday we said, "Yes, Carl. (Banks, could not find the radio link),  Pressure Brees.  Do not let him get into a rhythm.  Otherwise our Safeties will get exposed." Then yesterday Wonder repeated that same argument, that Brees with 3.5 seconds is an eternity, he'll find out where he needs to go, given the coverage.   Do you remember when we were discussing who the best QBs in the league were, that Wonder said Peyton Manning was #1 and Brees was #1a?  Do you remember why Wonder gave the tie to Manning?  Because when the PRESSURE comes, Manning knows where to go much faster/better than Brees (or anyone else, for that matter).  So essentially, Brees is human with pressure, he'll deliver a good ball to a good place, not necessarily THE place the way Manning can.  This does not imply that Brees cannot beat pressure The Giants simply have to shorten the amount of time he has to make the decision and hope for the best.  If the pressure is not HIGH, then our chances drop considerably.  At this point I am thinking the next time we meet this team it is January with (we hope and pray) Canty.

5) What in the world is Area Code 515? Click on the link, could be an interesting wrinkle. The problem is that w Alford on IR and Canty on Godot-IR, you have no more rotation left.  Maybe when Canty comes back in 2011.

6) Simms takes the Saints.  It is generally not easy to go against Wonder AND Simms the same game.  They have both been wrong before.  Neither are infallible, but they are unbiased and sober. Simms: "New Orleans is one of the few teams that can actually protect against the Giants defense.  Gregg Williams..they blitz, they have some corners that can cover."

7) YOUR VOICE MATTERS.  We heard from more than a few of you about the problems with inserting links getting rejected for spam.  We passed those complaints along to get a fix, and it was changed on Wednesday.  Link away.  Not only that, but now comments go up super fast.  This means the Sunday psychiatric services for Nature are back in gear.  Let the Gilbride therapy begin.

Another great article, I'm becoming a Giant fan by the day you guys have really good blogs. Sharper is out of position on 90% of the plays but he guess right based on probabilities so it's extremely difficult to look him off because he has no responsibility other than to trust his instincts. Gregg Williams believes that either the pressure will get there or that the corners will hold so it's very difficult to go through the progressions to find the holes in defense and Sharper just goes where he thinks a normal NFL qb would go with ball. That makes him extremely difficult to avoid. It is gonna be a great chess match between 2 great teams and hopefully we do this again in late January preferably NFC championship in the dome the weather will still be about 60 degrees then.

I fully enjoy reading this blog. Im glad people out there still pick the gmen. I personally since the ast season pick the giants to win about every game with the exception of Philly, because the giants have the ability and the desire to win every game, and winning has become second nature to this organization. It is gonna be a great classic game that can go either way, hopefully the giants don't blow it. This is a game where sheriden needs to shine. I hate gilbride just as much as you guys although he has made a pretty good turn around this year. What ever d doesn't break wins the game. Ive been thinking about it for a while and i see the giants win in mid fourth qt on a turnover or crucial 3 and out. 24-20

The reason why you are welcome here on a fulltime basis, Ian, is because you are not a Philly goon or Dallas America's team guy. I fully respect any fan of a team that has not yet seen the light of day (a championship, why we are here, championships) because of the suffering and the patience. I suffered for ~10 years as a kid thru the 70's and then another 5 before the holy grail was delivered. It is worth the wait (unless you are a Cubs fan, in which case you are dead!). You make us more knowledgeable about your team and that is better for us.

theduke- remind me to credit you if the Giants DO win. I am not making any pick this week. This game reminds me of the Dallas game (from an odds perspective only) where we have to be very perfect in order to win. In that case, we needed a 4-0 turnover ratio in order to still win with a FG at the end. So if the Giants win on Sunday, it is going to have to come with some help, because if the luck evens out and the balls don't bounce our way, the Saints will win. The reason why there is hope for the gmen beyond this game was already mentioned on the post, no need to repeat. We are still building something special this season, but we just need more things to be in line when you lose guys like Phillips to IR.

From T-rock
Domenik Hixon was fielding punts during special teams drills and will likely be doing so on Sunday.

"Hixon is fine," Coughlin said. "He is always going to be involved and his special teams role will come back as well."

In other words, Sinorice Moss' days of returning kickoffs and punts seem to be over. Coughlin, however, didn't blast Moss for the fumbled punt return on a bounce, calling it a "calculated risk." Still, he added, "If we could do it over, you would let it role into the end zone."

Procedure done on Chris Canty
written by Mitch K, October 16, 2009
from Mike Garafolo...

Last week, Tom Coughlin said Chris Canty has “issues” with his injured calf and that it’s been “difficult to get him beyond a certain point” in his rehab. Earlier this week, the Giants believed doctors identified and fixed an issue that will now get the defensive tackle over the hump.

Canty, the free-agent acquisition who has played only one game this season, underwent a medical procedure to stop bleeding in his calf that was preventing his strain from healing, according to someone briefed on the treatment. The person, who requested anonymity because the Giants haven’t mentioned the procedure publicly, said the bleeding was causing an inordinate amount of swelling.

Canty has not spoken to reporters this week, nor has he been at practice or in the locker room during the portions opened to the media. Someone who recently spoke to Canty and asked not to be named said the former Cowboys lineman was told by doctors after the procedure to move gingerly for a few days.

Canty, who signed a six-year, $42-million contract in March as a free agent after four seasons in Dallas, missed most of training camp and all four preseason games with a hamstring injury.

He returned for the regular-season opener against the Redskins but then suffered his calf strain in practice during the week leading up to what would have been his first game against Dallas.

Canty will not play on Sunday against the Saints and could miss at least one more game. Coach Tom Coughlin said on Wednesday the team is not considering shutting Canty down for the season.

“In a situation like that, a guy wants to get in and play as soon as possible,” defensive end Justin Tuck said. “You just have to be smart about situations like that. I would tell him to come back when you are ready man. We are playing pretty good right now and it’s not like we don’t have some guys that can step in while he is not going. We definitely need to be smart about it.”

Thank u Mitch I'll have to keep that offer in mind I've never been to New York, for that matter I'm 26 and have never seen snow in person lol. Capt George I work at Att so I have to give my customers the Directv catch phrase on a daily basis when trying to get them to switch to satelitte. But back to football, there are 3 key matchups that Giants need to win to be victorious against my Saints. 1) Bradshaw vs. Vilma. Vilma is the only speed linebacker we have but he is a really good one. 2) Steve Smith/ Manningham/ Nicks vs. Tracy Porter/ Jabari Greer. Greer has shut down all 3 wrs he has faced most notably Calvin Johnson and Terrell Owens. CJ 3 catches 90 yards but 67 on one play when 4th corner was in game. TO no catches. Porter will be a household name in next year or so. The most important of all is Giants interior D-line vs. Guards Jahri Evans and Carl Nicks. Arguably best guard tandem in league if Evans and Nicks can get to the 2nd level it's gonna be a long day for Giants fans cuz then Payton will be able to dictate game with power run game and playaction pass. But if the Giants win those matchups I'm gonna be going home from the dome quite pissed.

#58 preview on matchups:

1) Special Teams significant factor and containing Bush. Hixon is a big plus for return game to garner good field position.........He didn't mention Tynes but he better get them deep and consistent versus what he was doing before the Oakland game.

2) The 2ndary, and D as a whole, must be disciplined as it relates to their assignments. Brees is a master of disguising, looking off receivers and drawing defenders to open up his receivers. Must get them in 3rd and long as he will pick them apart with 2nd and short and 3rd and short all day.....He didn't mention a guy who has trouble here, Osi. Osi's got to play disciplined gap control as this will open things up for their RBs on runs, screens etc.

3) They need to be physical with the Saints as this is not the Saints game on a unit by unit basis. Giants need to impose their physical will adn keep them out of their rythme.....I agree and really feel that Jacobs is going to do some damage in this game as he is extremely pissed off right now.

4) The Oline can handle blitzes and there is not a concern here with the Saints blitz schemes.....Agreed this unit is so experienced and will make them pay if they blitz often. They seemed to to have handled the Cowgirls well.

I just can't wait to see hwo they perform and handle this game. As I said before if we lose no big deal as the Philly game means much more. Plus, the early bye for the Saints is going to hurt them in the long run.

Gladwell piece
written by Gilad, October 16, 2009
Hey Andy, your comment about concussions and all that doesn't get to the main point of Gladwell's article, which is that it's the cumulative effect of all those hits to the head, even the ones that don't cause concussions, that poses such an incredible risk to football players' long-term mental health. Being more vigilant about concussions would be better than nothing, but the unsettling conclusion Gladwell hints at (hence the dog-fighting analogy, which I think is over the top) is that long-term brain damage is built into the game of football.

written by ultimatenyg, October 16, 2009
Gilad- Yes, I presumed that everyone already knew that conclusion of the cumulative nature, with or without a concussion. I guess I just always assumed you did not need a 'concussion' in and of itself. Thanks for pointing that out though. As for the concussions, it is still a big part of the problem, ie MANY smaller hits = 1 concussion. So if you can keep the head off limits, that is something. How are you possibly going to do anything about the many smaller hits? Football will never be banned.

Master of the obvious, the Canty news from last night was HUGE. We'll talk that up a bit tomorrow morning.
