Minn 44 Giants 7
Written by Andy Furman
Sunday, 03 January 2010 16:00

Mike Francesa can let in the Giants callers Monday and do it all over again. Pathetic, embarrassing, no pride.  What more is there to say this week that wasn't already said a week ago?  Did last week's game need an exclamation point?

First off, we have to give props to Roberts for nailing this earlier in the week:

"I would not be surprised to see Minn build a commanding lead (27-3) and then coast the rest of the game. The current edition of the NY Giants doesn't have it in them to make Minn work for it."

Considering it was 31-0 at halftime, I'd say that was a pretty good call.  He jokingly remarked how he was a little bit too optimistic about the offense.

Is there anything in this game that can be learned about the players and the coaches that we do not already know after the demolition last weekend vs the Carolina Panthers?  We knew the Giants did not have a defense, and we knew that whenever they went up against a credible QB they were in deeper trouble.

Amazingly, there is no need for any analysis.  No need for the good, the bad and the ugly.  Just like vs the Panthers, it is all ugly.  This marks the fifth time (Saints, Eagles twice, Panthers, Vikings) the Giants have given up 40+ points in a single season.   This also marks the fifth time (Saints, Eagles, Broncos, Panthers, Vikings) the Giants have been blown out of the stadium in a single season.  Simply uncompetitive and undeserving of belonging in an NFL contest in 5 separate games.  We'll have the offseason to look to the future, but do not think about Super Bowl XLV just yet.  Think small steps.  Think about being competitive again in 16 contests.  This team is not an NFL team right now and needs to be put back together.

A final note.  Tom Coughlin came in January 2004 and said his job was to restore team pride.  He took a rookie QB and got us a Super Bowl.  You have to give Coughlin all the credit in the world for that.  But likewise, the street runs two ways.  If you get the credit, you also accept the blame.  The final word on this season from this NY Giants blog is that Tom Coughlin must accept blame for the loss of Giants pride.

If you give Coughlin the credit for the SB, then you have to hold him accountable for the three 1 and done loses in the playoffs. Especially when we were home favorites in two of them.

This team gave up and that is all on the coach. He has lost them just as he lost them last year. Just how he lost Plax, and Shockey and Tiki. Were it not for the magical SB run thick about the blistering commentary regarding Coughlin. I think we won the SB because of Spags, in spite of Coughlin and Gilbride. Time to pin this on all of the coaches. Sadly I doubt the Giants will dump Coughlin, but stranger things have happened.

I'm happy they got smoked. Don't get me wrong; I've been a Giants fan since the '50s, but if you don't expose the problems, there will be no solutions. This ugly spanking is indicative of where the Giants organization has ended up. Harry Carson was correct when he said the players had neither heart nor pride. And that comes from the coaches. If the coaches cannot dictate the effort necessary for the team to perform at a high level then they're not doing their job. And if the coaches don't give the team the necessary schemes and game plan to win, then the players will lose confidence in their coaches and their ability to win. Coughlin has lost a moderately talented team that grossly underachieved; that's obvious. The defense never had confidence in Sheridan which is evident in their play, and Gilbride was exposed today. The Front Office needs to make a move...
WHOOO!

Totally pumped after today's showing. The players laid down cause they want a house cleaning as do we. Fire em all! Coughlin is ancient does not instill fire or will to compete, a non-motivator. TC thanks for the SB they need to dump his ass. He's responsible for the worst 2 coordinators in the league.

I really could not have been more happy with this loss. Imagine if the Giants won. We'd be stuck with TC, Gilbride, and Sheridan. So had they not been blown out last week or this week we would be 10-6 and not have made the playoffs. Dallas and GB are dominating right now. So it would have been a waste. That would have been the worst outcome 10-6 no playoffs and for sure stuck with the same shit staff not to mention we'd be picking 8 spots back in the draft. Now you can bet your ass Sheridan is gone. I wouldn't be surprised if they made the move tomorrow. Especially when you have long time Giant Greats calling this team an embarassment.

Even if we won today or played competitive it might have saved Sheridan. Now for sure there is no turning back. He's a goner. And if we won today we'd be picking in the 20's. The Falcons won, Steelers won, Texans won, Ravens are winning, Panthers won, San Fran Won (might not matter due to SOS), Titans (same thing with SOS), hopefully Jets win, Denver wins (even if they lose we might be ahead of them due to SOS), Jags (8-smilies/cool.gif but probably pick ahead due to SOS friggen Mangina trying to save his job and screwed us out of a pick ahead of them. Sucks too cause Jags have the same draft needs as us (LBer, LBer, LBer) maybe they go receiver though. But all in all could be a huge day for the franchise. If only we lost to the skins on MNF we'd be picking in the top 10.

You couldn't have said it any better!!!
The coaching sets the tone on the team...look at those teams that consistently compete...they have the strong leadership on the sidelines and on both sides of scrimmage!
The Giants DC is so BS...just look at this article by Paul Schwartz of the NYPost.

He has no clue how bad his defense coaching has been!

All 3 need to go
written by Leslie Hayes, January 03, 2010
Another embarrassing debacle where they were NEVER in the game. As soon as Vikings scored 10 I knew the GBoys didn't have it in them to dig deep and challenge the Vikings, never mind win the game - and that is SAD.

2 weeks in a row we find ourselves in an early hole and Gilbride has NO game plan to score points quickly, no big plays or playmakers to make a respectable run at getting us back into the game. We are down 41 points and still no hurry up offense, no 2 minute drills - hell we are still running draw plays - outrageous! Eli has his best year and we don't make the playoffs?? Pls give us a creative OC who knows how to utilize our talent (good to finally see Barden-nice catch) and not be so predictable that even I know we are throwing on 3rd down!

My only hope is that this 5th humiliating loss will force the normally loyal owners to make tough decisions and start the season w/ TC, OC and DC ALL gone. This team had alot of talent, but no mental toughness. ALL coaches are responsible for not making adjustments and stopping the bleeding during this hideous season, not just Sheridan. I don't want to hear about injuries, every team has injuries and they don't lay down, start 5-0 and end 8-8!

As someone on the FAN post game show said, the season lives on in film and Reese and the owners have to study it, game by game, play by play and get rid of the players who have no pride in being a Giant or respect for the organization and most importantly their fans. I hope the owners start the season w/new coaches and bring GIANT pride back to the organization and its fans!

Worst loss in 44 years!

Deja Vue All Over Again

I am not going to discuss this game other than to say it was disgusting! I am going to say this. If you guys have a chance to go to the archives, take a look at what some of us have been saying as early as training camp.
We took a lot of heat as we were called names, described as negative, questioned about how a "true" Giants fan could root against this team. You name it,we were called it.
The fact is that Andy,Mitch K,ultimatebaseball giants and others are die hard Giant fans. I was called names for using objectivity as an excuse to be negative. I am NOT any more negative than what I saw this season and knew it was coming. On the one hand I feel o.k. about being right. On the other hand I am totally down about something I think could have been avoided if the Giant Hierarchy acted as an organization should. No,it would have been difficult to fire Coughlin in mid-season although it was obvious to some of us that either he has early Alzheimers or is just a stubborn, reactionary coach that the league caught up with. It would NOT have been premature ro fire Sheridan and /or Gilbride several games ago. You simply cannot find excuses for a defense that gives up 40 or more this many times and plays without pride or respect for themselves, their coach or their fans. The way this season ended will linger and be a destructive force on all the players until/unless the entire front office is changed. I like Jerry Reese as I feel he has drafted well, very well. I don't know how much authority he has so you can't blame him for the inexplicable lack of action. You can blame him for the free agents he signed. Bernard is a joke,Canty is now suspect unless proven otherwise and Boley may work out. We used $15 million dollars to hire these guys and obviously it didn't pan out. Reese has said nothing which I suppose is the right thing until seasons end. Now,the rubber hits the road.
Woody Johnson of the other N.Y. team has made a lot of mistakes. He has hired the wrong people, the wrong coaches and looked foolish with the Brett Favre fiasco. To his credit however,he kept at it. He dumped Mangini, let Favre go and hired Ryan who has proven his competence as a head coach. They gambled in the draft and it looks like they won. They brought in players with a winning attitude and they spent the money. They are playing for a playoff spot when they were a door mat just a year ago.
As incredibly great as it was to get the ring it is worse to see this. It was like a cancer patient in remission. The problems went away for a short time and 18 months later the patient is arguably terminal. I don't believe that as there is a core of very good young players who,if they stay healthy will be here a long time. The Giants however, have been exposed as an aging, injury prone pretender. It starts at the top so,the entire coaching staff must take responsibility for what has happened. There is NO WAY they can recapture the faith of this team. If they are not swept out then this franchise will be damaged beyond just more of the same. It will take years to fix it.
My point is,it's not just that they lost,it's how they lost. I am thoroughly disgusted and frustrated but I am going forward to look at the next draft and what the Giant hierarchy does. I would like to see what Eli can do with a really good coordinator and I am anxious to see us rebuild a defense that does have some quality players. Remember, this team was picked as one of three favorites to win the Super Bowl and with the BEST defense in the N.F.L. Yeah,it's true. So,how much was Spags really worth? His effort and results are that much more remarkable considering what we have seen since he left.

"What we have here is a failure to communicate"
written by Mitch K, January 03, 2010
Our season is mercifully over. Thank G-d we do not have to endure any more performances like that again.

I'm going to go back to about Week 8 or 9 when Carl Banks weighed in on what he really thought the problems facing Big Blue were. What sticks out in my mind was he did not absolve the players entirely, but he placed the real problem with the coaching staff.

He felt first and foremost, that to be a good coach in this league you must be a great teacher. Your pupils have to understand what you want done, and you must be able to have your players go and execute your philosophy.

That is where the season fell apart, specifically for the defense. Sheridan is not a people person, he did not want to be down in the trenches. He is not the type to inspire players to achieve and is much more of an X & O's guy who wanted to view it all from above. Whether that would have worked is anybody's guess ( but I'll say it wouldn't have mattered ) We have all had bad teachers in our lives I'm sure we remember how frustrating it was. He simply is not a viable communicator and therefore his teaching methods go by the boards. To compound the problem...what does Coughlin do? He promptly orders him on the sidelines ( against his wishes) because he figures Spags was effective, so that is the way to go. Coughlin once again proves that he does not have a pulse for people or specifically his team.

The season continues to spiral out of control and Coughlin shows he really is clueless on how to fix things or create any confidence in his players. They stopped listening & playing for him. That is a terrible indictment of your leader and not traits that you want to see from of your Head Coach.

On moving forward from here this team is really in need of a large rebuilding effort. There are so many holes to fill.

The real crime is...nobody saw this coming. NOBODY!!!

That is why we are all so frustrated. This team has taken a Giant leap backwards.

To Mr. Mara & Mr. Tisch...

All of us longtime Giants fans are relying on you to see the problems and act on them quickly. We all hurt and we know you do as well. But you alone have the power. Let's hope that you can see the big picture and restore this franchise to where it is supposed to be.

i just got done watching clips on giant.com from couglin's press conference....as far as i could discern, he was claiming that the team was prepared, that he thought they were prepared, and that the effort was there today......instead of stating the obvious truth, which is that we put forth very little effort today, and showed no pride in trying to win this game.......i have been on the fence about whether couglin should be fired, mainly out of loyalty from our super bowl win and the fact that he does really seem to care.....(although i quickly tired of his "i am going to go home and take my marbles with me look", exhibited rhroughout his tenure here)_......but i must say after last week, and today, and hearing his comments in the press conference, i now count myself strongly in the column of cleaning house....i cannot say which players deserve to go as part of this same house cleaning, but i am thinking fred robbins, antonio pierce, cc brown, wilkinson, bernard, and clark..........at least all of those should be on the block.....some of them have given us admirable service, such as pierce and robbins, but it is time for a changing of the guard....i see there is some criticism of osi, and i get that to some degree....but i would give him one more year after he has some more time to recover from the surgery and gets some more help from dt's we hope to add.....on the offense i dont really see any need for cleaning house, just adding a starter to the OL and hoping that beatty will be ready soon to start as well....another TE and another WR, on the wish list another RB or hopes that andre brown can come back healthy....our emphasis first and foremost must be on free agent at safety, drafting a DT in the first or second round, LB's, at least one CB in the early to mid rounds...as always we should continue trying to find pass rushers in the DT we draft, the LB's we draft and hopefully some mid to late round picks of de's or tweeners from smaller schools.....but we also need to get more physical, and a classic MLB would help there along with the DT and safety we hope to add.......assuming kenny phillips comes back, we still need at least three new starters on defense.....irishmac out for this season

I really think that Reese has done a good job drafting, except for his LB picks. I beleive that the Giants have specific scouts for specific positions. If that is the case than our scouting of LB is pretty poor. Kehl, Goff, Wilkerson, don't seem to have it. Sintim will get an incomplete for now. Perhaps it points to our LB coach (previously Sheridan) or the LB scouting.

Moving forward there must be some major changes. I for one do not feel CC Brown and Rouse are NFL caliber players. Not one of our LB's seems to make impact plays. Our DL underperformed.

Yet in the right hands, this could be a good team. Lets hope some good can come from this bad...
wrinkles as accidental is not acceptable!!
written by richbaub, January 03, 2010
Earlier this year, as the Jints began to lose, I silently begged Gilbrown and Sherbrown to incorporate a WRINKLE into their game plans--one that was especially designed for the week's opponent... I remember Parcells, with a running team and SCOTT BRUNNER at qb, opening up a playoff game vs. the 49ers back in the '80's with a long pass up the crease--and I KNEW they had game planned something special, something unexpected--a pass on first down!! For cryin' out loud, the Giants of back then hadn't passed on first down all year, and I was psyched!! I knew the Giants were ALL IN, baby! (They still lost--Scott Brunner??!!) But how often has any Giant fan of late felt that way? And how many times did a Parcells-Belicheck team come roaring out of halftime with some WRINKLE they'd come up with on the fly that flummoxed the high-flying opponent and changed the momentum of the game in the Giants' favor? The last time I felt that way was when Boss ripped up the field for 40+ in the SB to start the 4th Q... Where did THAT come from?? And I think it's safe to say that every Giants' fan still feels sick about how we faced the Ravens in the SB with NO APPARENT GAME PLAN WHATSOEVER! (Deep breath.) This year, only if both the "O" line AND Eli were healthy and "feeling it" did they have a CHANCE. There is no place in this rant regarding the Giants' "d." They were a stone around the neck of offensive and special teams units that were decent--too often clumsy and predictable, but decent. Other teams simply were free to tee up on our "O" because they were already ahead and were never frightened by a deficit. Now, if you, as OC, knew this to be the case, hmmm, wouldn't you jack up your offense in some way--get out of that traditional "we've got to establish the run" or "we'll use the pass to establish the run" sort of mentality?? Think draw, play action, screen, reverse, roll out... But no. Regular offense (as if you have a defense). Run long outs and ins. Run short outs and ins. Throw a bomb once in a while to "loosen up the D." And please only consider the TE and RB's as drop-down choices. Yawn. Do we need to look any further than those stupid dumps to Hedgecock or silly college wide receiver screens? YOU HAVE NO DEFENSE, SO YOU BETTER HAVE A WRINKLE OR TWO ON "O" THAT'S GOING TO GET YOU AHEAD EARLY OR SHOW THE OTHER "D" IT'S GOING TO BE A LONG, CONFUSING NIGHT FOR THEM!!! Never happened, never will with Gilbrown.

Peter is absolutely correct. It's not that they lost, its How they lost. I'm afraid it is now clear that TC is the problem, not the solution. As long as he is coach, this team will not be able to make a substantial reversal and comeback. It's disgusting, but I believe that is what we are stuck with. If the Maras & Tisches remain loyal to TC for whatever reason, it will be a painful time for us fans.

If Mara is a shrewd businessman, he fires Coughlin monday morning. From a PR standpoint, as the Giants move into their new stadium, they cannot retain Coughlin's services. If Mara decides to keep Coughlin, for the entire offseason and up until the regular season, the negative focus will be on Coughlin. And not on the new stadium.

In addition, the Giants were supposed to contend for a title this year. After finishing a mediocre 8-8 and getting blown out in their last two games, this team is in shambles. Yes, Coughlin has two years left on his current contract. The time is now to move on.

Some fans believe Coughlin has to stay because he won a Super Bowl and has led the Giants to four consecutive playoff appearances. I disagree. The Giants were lucky to win Super Bowl XLII. Luck plays an important part in winning a title. From the book America's Game, Art Rooney recalled riding with Vince Lombardi on a coast to coast flight, and hearing him talk "about how lucky you must be to win a title. Like a golfer who remembers each shot, Lombardi remembered all the breaks of the season that went in his favor, fumbles recovered, punt that rolled out of bounds instead of the end zone."

Coughlin's luck has run out. It is time for a new head coach and new beginning.

15th pick in the 1st round
written by xtian, January 03, 2010
the only good news is that almost the 11 games that effected the giants draft order went their way. 8 positive [sf, atl, nyj, car, hou, tenn, balt, nyg], 2 negative [jac & den--but only 1 for the 1st round-den], and 1 split [pitt-mia]. overall, quite fortunate.

that's the ray of light in that disaster of a game.
Good stuff but-
written by psffur, January 04, 2010
I agree with Glen. The change should come asap as teams will be scurrying to make change. The ones who have actually admitted their problems and have been looking for weeks,in Buffalo's case months.
There are stories cirvualating in Buffalo and Washington. It is sais that Cowher has visited Northern N.Y. several times. I just can't believe he will go there and I don't believe that Wilson will give in to his demands. The latest is Shanahan in Washington and Snyder may just be willing to give him control. He won't take the job if his terms aren't met. I will go on record now that if Shanny takes the job it will NOT work out. He has seen his day and if he takes something it probably would be a team closer to winning. Cowher is a big question mark but he has previously stated he doesn't want to coach in N.Y. and I think he meant it. Cowher is one of those guys who has principles and wants control. I doubt Mara,Tish will give it up. Hell, they wouldn't give it to Parcells who earned it so,why give it to Cowher who on his very best day was not Bill Parcells.
I know,I am probably hoping that Jim Fox wants to come home. The Panthers finished 8-8 with a four game streak and looked every bit like a playoff team. They beat good teams down the stretch and seem to be peaking now. They run the ball and play hard nosed defense. That is our way and after Dekhomme got hurt they blossomed under a virtual unknown QB. They just needed someone who could cpm[;ete a pass, scramble a little and lean on Stewart who had one hell of a year. Fox was offered a one year extention which is not much of a vote of confidence so,who knows? I am intrigued by Russ Grim in Arizona who has been a brides maid several times. He is asst head coach in the desert,an offensive line guy and a man whose time has come.
There are always guys we don't know who are ready. Spags came out of nowhere as have others. I will be following the possibilities closely. The important thing is for the lesgue and the coaches know the Giants are changing and there is an opening. It serves the purpose of msking someone think before they committ somewhere else.
This statement by Coughlin the this team played well, was prepared etc is really crazy and dillusional. This team is the worst defensive team in football, one of the worst red zone offense and defense teams and the whole thing has imploded. Coaches do go insane and Coughlin may be just that. He got his ring by hook or by crook and now it's time to go. We have all seen the same thing and heard the words of a man who is disassociated with reality. There is no joy in Mudville, just hope.
My fears
written by Roberts, January 04, 2010
I don't think the Giants can offer Fox a job. He is after all under contract with the Panthers. I believe he still has one year left. And I don't think he was fired. I believe Mr. Fox has only three choices, quit, sign the one year extension, or coach out his final year. I believe that if the Giants "talk" to him while he is under contract then they are tampering.

My real fear is that we hire another loser coach. But I guess you have to gamble to win. I personally dont' want another retread. That just doesn't get it done for me. After all, if they were so good the first time, why are they now unemployed?
Sheridan To Be Fired!!
written by psffur, January 04, 2010
The sporting news is reporting that Bill Sheridan is toast. They say he will be fired within days. In my opinion it is obviously the right thing to do. Some say that it's his first year and all the injuries etc. The cold hard fact is that being a coordinator is NOT a learn on the job deal. You are supposed to be ready!!
I hope that this isn't the only staff change. We know that Coughlin chose Sheridan as he said" I want to keep things stable. I want to hire from within" Sheridan was as destructive to the Giants as Spags was the difference in 07. When does Coughlin get his just due? He is responsible as head coach if indeed he makes the choices. I have this feeling that hiring Spags was NOT his move. That's just a guess on my part as we really don't know who made that decision. What we do know is thagt Spags is certainly not in the mold of Coughlins plain Vanilla, reactionary, overly conservative style. His entire career is marked by military type behavior and dogmatic, narrow minded philosophy. I submit it took all season and he was so busy saying his guys were trying that he was frozen. The rule he has about not playing a rookie is just plain narrow minded. It's true that there is a learning curve for most but not for all. Nicks sat as did everyone else who might have helped. Certainly, after 8 games giving his young guys experience seems like a good move. He said"Barden wasn't ready for special teams" Was he watching how our special teams were playing.Barden and Bekham both caught the ball Sunday. Smith ended with 109 catches. There were a number of guys who played well in a miserable year so,with time to heal for some and not having to play for Sheridan is a plus.
In my opinion it's not even close to enough. Coughlin got the credit along with Gilbride for the ring. Now he needs to take the heat for his irrational and arguably incompetent defense of a team that even the players themselves say was an embarrassment. Barry Cofield said he was ashamed for the teams effort and it was the worst since he has been a Giant. Osi will get a new life so,that's good news. There is nothing noble in saying something like everyone played hard after another 40 p0jnt blow out. He has made similar comments all year like"we played well but we just missed some tackles". Time for Tom to play with Bobby Bowden,Joe Gibbs,Marv Levy and the others who stepped down after good careers He won't do it voluntarily but if the Giants don't really clean house with an entirely new regime we will contginue to go backwards. Let's see if Mara and Tish and Reese can make the hard decision. The team is watching and so are we. The ultimate responsibility lies with the head coach,period.16 games,40 points given in 5 of them. No game plans,no adjustments,no chemistry.
Press conferences a sham!
written by glenn warciski, January 04, 2010
Heard Coughlin and Reese's presser. Very lame. Coughlin talked in circles. Paraphrasing, "We will evaluate everyone's performance." Although the Giants played pathetic football for the entire year, Reese stated, paraphrasing, "There is Giant pride on this team."

CB Terrell Thomas who is a favorite of mine was the most forecoming, “We just got exposed,” Thomas said. “When you’re winning it covers up a lot of holes, but the holes just kept resurfacing throughout the season.”

Mara too many non competitive games. Lack of mental and physical toughness. Lack of effort.

To fans: Do what we need to do. Not pleased with anybody. Not effort he expected.

Look at roster. Take nothing for granted. Changes in coaching staff. NO status quo with coaches.

Tom is safe.

Take awhile to get over last two weeks.

Anxious to hear from Tom and Jerry to fix team.

Spent a lot money in offseason, did not get production.

Did not see last two weeks coming.

More toward second half of season lack of toughness. Injuries not an excuse. Last 11 weeks poor play.

Lack of leadership in locker room. Disappointed.

Not enough players making plays.

Receivers best unit.

Lack of pressure on quarterback biggest disappointed.

Discussions over the next few weeks about team and coaching staff.

What a year
written by NYCBigBluefan, January 04, 2010
So let me start by saying that I've never seen a team that was so close yet so far away. I'm almost glad we didn't make the playoffs this year, we need the draft picks. First of all, DL has been a major weakness, I'm excited to get Alford back next year but also, we need to pick someone up. Our LBer corps is either too old and beaten up to play (Pierce) or too young to command the team (Goff). We need to get our identity back. Listening to Rex Ryan talk after the Jets game made me really jealous. We need a coach like this. He talked about how who they are is a team that plays hard hungry D and runs the football. This should also be who WE are. LBer, D-Line, Strong Safety, Running Back depth, this is what we must look to in the offseason. This years' draft is crucial. I couldn't believe I was watching a team with Tuck, Osi and Kiwi that couldn't get to the QB, this is shameful. We got no push up the middle at all. Sheridan should be gone, or maybe even the whole staff (Bill Cowher to replace Tom Coughlin before it's too late?)
ball protection
written by NYCBigBluefan, January 04, 2010
OMFG, this team needs to learn how to protect the ball. Whether its Jacobs or Manningham, this team could have caught lightning in a jar had Jacobs not dropped that ball against eagles and Manningham not dropped that ball against Carolina (the team gave up after that against the Panthers). Mistakes just take all the air out of your sails. Every player who fumbled this year needs to have a ball in their hands for the whole offseason. Second question... Jacobs said he would retire if his season didn't get better... it didn't... it got worse. So what happens now? Was he being sincere? I certainly hope not. Even if his best days as a standard every play downhill running back are numbered, he still has a lot of ability and is a very useful player to any offense. What we saw him do on screen passes this year was awesome. He could be sort of a tight end-tail back flex guy. This being said, Bradshaw is our guy, it's obvious to anyone who has been watching the Gmen, not just Bradshawaholics like you or me. We need a standard, punch you in the face (not so tall and big that he can't get through holes) running back. Llendale White is a free agent, this move is so obvious, it's stupid. Llendale slimmed down and got stronger this year, and actually looks quite a bit better, not that anyone would notice because he shares the backfield with Chris "the demi-god" Johnson. There are so many great free agents this year at skill positions. I think we get our offensive guys through free agency and defense through the draft (maybe a MLB through free agency). There are so many questions to be asked, it's hard to think about how Jerry Reese is gonna answer them. He needs to pull out all the stops, the NFL is a win now league, this isn't baseball and there IS a salary cap (for now).

I agree with Blink and Mayor, I too am a Giant fan from the 50's and believe coaches are suppose to teach and give motovaition to his players and talk to his players and get feed back, I have seen nothing of this with this present Giant team, I just hope its not another Allie Sherman era?
Def.
written by Cody K, January 04, 2010
He's gone. WFAN is saying maybe Kirk Olivadotti (Wash redskins LB's coach) and perhaps Jim Haslett and maybe Dick Jauron. I'd like the Giants to sit back a little on this one and make a solid decision. Guys like Jauron (and Haslett) aren't going anywhere and who knows who else will shake loose between now and the time the Gmen make their final decision.

Obviously the Giants would love to get their hands on "the one who got away" - John Fox. Obviously way too many "if's" - but dare to dream, right? (ie IF he leaves the Panthers, and IF perhaps the Giants can somehow bring in Fox as the "Head Coach in Waiting" and have Coughlin be ok with it, and IF they could have him come in and coach the defense for the next two years...etc, etc.)

Either way, I'm glad that management has chosen to move past the 2009 season - obviously the players did sometime prior to the Carolina game.

I really hope this is not the sacrificial lamb gesture. It smells like a beheading to please the angry mob...which means "Old Tom" is still in the driver's seat...buckle up punks...there's more disasters on the horizons if "Old Tom" is left to drive the bus!

coughlin
written by irishmacmystic, January 04, 2010
if anything i was predisposed to have coughlin come back, but the final two games really made it clear to me that the man deserved to be fired...after all, he hired sheridan and sheridan is now fired and honestly i just cannot see how anyone in any profession gets to keep their job after such a disastrous performance down the stretch (well actually i can think of some but will let that go)...i also felt he was disingenuous in the press conference yesterday about the amount of effort in yesterday's game, and that really bugged me......but given the conservative/loyal nature of the giants, it is not surprising that coughlin is coming back...{has there been any word on gilbride? i am thinking he is going to be protected as well}..thinking back, i remember in the first half of the new orleans game at one point i really thought they might score 70 points....i really mean it.....they called off the dogs in the second half or they might have....but it was the carolina game that was the most sickening example of the lack of effort and motivation on this team.....and after that the viking game was hardly a surprise but also sickening to watch......i see the nfc east getting tougher next year, not easier, and we better be ready for the dance...........
NYCbigblue? LENDALE WHITE?
written by The Mayor, January 04, 2010
You can't be serious Lendale White is an obvious signing!? Are you out of your mind. Hell to the motherF'en NO! Not obvious and not worth a grain of salt. Why White? So we could have 2 slow goal line busts. He's the same type of back as brandon jacobs. Seriously, LenDale White and hard worker don't belong in the same sentence. The guy is not a leader nor hungry to work for anything. After all this was his contract year and he did squat. Not to mention he's got mediocre speed can't catch the ball out of the backfield something we need desperately. Giants should draft a solid rookie running back with real value. I hope Jahvid Best in the first round if Rolando McClain is already taken or we don't move up to take him. We're picking 15th so we will get a dynamic player. Best will be a force in the NFL Cals O line sucked and this guy would still put up beast games. He was there whole team. If we go LBer in the 1st round. I would love to see the Giants pick up Dexter McCluster from Ole Miss. He could be a DeSean Jackson type punt returner. He's slim but fast as hell and elusive. McCluster or Best are NFL ready backs and would be a great fit for us. Them with Jacobs and Bradshaw, we would be unstoppable. Problem is TC's dumb ass would probably be too conservative risk starting a rookie and end up going with Ware or Brown. If G Men do not get McCluster or Best, then I'd like to see us try and get LeGarette Blount as a value pick in the 3rd or 4th round. This guy was suppose to be the #2 running back in the draft preseason until he punched the Boise guy in the face. Maybe we'll get lucky and if we take him he'll do the same to Flozell Adams. Lol.

POP THE CHAMPAGNE! SHERIDAN IS GONE! I called that move yesterday, G Men had to do it. Now we got to hope the same for Gilbride and Coughlin, but more probable that Gilbride will get the axe. Though I doubt either will.

Last thing, we need to sign a veteran Linebacker, and draft a top notch linebacker in the 1st or 2nd round. If we go D-End or D-end/LB'er hybrid again i will go nuts.
mayor response
written by irishmacmystic, January 04, 2010
responding to the mayor, i watched the ole miss game and mccluster was impressive at 175 pounds had many many touches and looked unscathed each time he took a big hit....extremely quick and hard nosed...best looks great as well....i love the idea of adding a dynamic running back/returner to put a little more zip in our offense, the eagles have really gotten ahead of us with the desean jackson, maclin and lesean mccoy picks.....they are young and dangerous (that is not to say i dont like nicks and smith, but they lack the flat out homer jones like killer speed--manningham remains a question mark).....BUT unfortunately i just cannot go there in the first round, not with what we witnessed in our defense this year....for me it has to be defense in the first round, DT, S, LB,or even CB if the right one is still there, with of course free agency entering in what position we might be looking at.......if somehow someone like mccluster goes into the second round (desean jackson was taken in the second and for that matter i think westbrook was) i would be all for that sort of a pick then.....or even moving up in the second to seize on someone like that..as for blount, maybe jacobs and blount can square off with flozell if we take blount, but i would have to check out his head carefully before selecting him.....but it is worth looking into.....we really need to get a grade of A in free agency and the draft to have any chance next year....we need to go out of character and be extremely aggressive........
Released by Coughlin

Hopefully we hire a DC that has balls enough to run the defense and not stand there with his johnson in his hand while the team falls apart around him. Spags was the man and there are others who possess this type of fire and won't hide behind the clipboard. I think the Giants have someone in mind and don't want our rivals to grab him up first. IF they do make a signing relatively soon, maybe there is a chance we make a change at the HC position as well. I think they'll keep Gilbride just so they don't create any turmoil regarding the offense which is odd. They have an arsenal of weapons at their disposal and an OC who only fires blanks.
John Mara's is in charge!
written by Mitch K, January 04, 2010
I think Mara spoke for every fan when he said this felt more like a 2-14 season than an 8-8 season. He was visibly upset when being interviewed today. The beat writers had just finished an interview session with Coughlin and he gave them the same spiel he always does about...we'll see, we have to discuss, we have to evaluate...blah, blah, blah. Mara is interviewed later and he is seething. This is totally unacceptable and changes will be made. Twenty minutes later...Sheridan is fired. We all know where this firing came from. Mara wanted him gone. I think the rest of the defensive staff is in great jeopardy as well. Peter Giunta, David Merritt, Jim Herrmann & Mike Waufle. My gut tells me that Coughlin now has to turn this around pronto or he will not be there in 2011. Even if Mara's motivation was PSL's, I'm glad he acted.

Sheridan- An Albert Fall
written by glenn warciski, January 04, 2010
Sheridan was the fall guy. The big fish is safe. Today, I did not like Coughlin's and Reese's presser. Both were prevaricating. Reese blaming injuries?? Coughlin suggesting, as a reminder, players post a sticky note on their mirror. This would remind them how disappointing 2009 ended. What?? Rosters turnover each year. This reminds me of Fassel. After blowing a playoff game against SF, "One of the things I told them was … I still hope you have the dirt from 3Com Park in your mouth, and will keep it there for awhile," Unfortunately, the Giants swallowed the dirt. They finished 4-12 in 2003. This team is in turmoil. Giants will have losing record in 2010. Thankfully, Mara let them have it. Mara was unhappy with toughness (mental and physical). Injuries were not catastrophic. Pass rush a disappointment. No leadership in locker room.

Could it get any worse?
Irish Mac...
written by The Mayor, January 04, 2010
Irish Mac glad your not gone for the year like you said you were in one of your previous posts, I appreciate your insight. Good point, we have plenty of needs on D. A good cover corner to compliment Webster. Another Safety. My point is this draft seems to be loaded more with defensive players. If the right linebacker or DT is there as in Bama's DT Cody or McClain then for sure we should grab him. We do not need DE's early in the draft. Also there will be other ways to address some of our Defensive needs through Free Agency especially having an uncapped year. But how I look at it is this. You are not going to get a game breaker/dynamic player that could change a franchise in free agency without spending a boat load of money and also taking risk (age, injuries, etc..). Guys like McCluster and Best are similar to Chris Johnson. Big time playmakers with the speed to bust out a touchdown, yet physical toughness and experience leading their teams to victory to where they for sure will not be busts.

I wasn't suggesting take McCluster in the 1st round as I think he will be there in the 2nd round. He's tore up every defense in the SEC and SEC defenses are the best in the country. (I hate the SEC too but sadly top to bottom it's the truth). If he's there in the 2nd we should grab him. Other than that I am defense for the rest of the draft and maybe an O lineman for value. But definitely aggressive and grab value picks. Blount would have tremendous value and one punch cause some guy got in his face after a game. I mean who can blame him the other punk from Boise should've been suspended as well. You can't chastise someone forever for losing his temper. Big game big emotions and the important part is the guy stayed with the team kept practicing knowing he was suspended for the season. Thats impressive. And if we go defense 1st two rounds I would love it if we grabbed him in the 3rd.
Smoke and Mirrors
written by psffur, January 05, 2010
So,
Mara is pissed. He just sold $17million in Loews stock today and he is pissed. Hell,he didn't make the money.
Yes,Sheridan had to go and fast. Least we forget,Coughlin hired him, kept him and is dodging rain drops. How about some accountability!! It is almost unheard of that any team would have to fire a guy after one season especially a guy who was YOUR linebackers coach for 3 years. This was a monumental mistake. Coughlin is a jerk. He should just walk away or work out some deal with Mara and leave. I had much respect for Joe Gibbs manning up and doing that and he was 10x the coach that Coughlin is. I thought that Thomas's and Cofield's comments were a breath of fresh air. Some of us have been talking about the problems since training camp. I want to congratulate all the people who went against the crowd, took early heat but proved to be absolutely correct. It's tough to criticize a team when they are 5-0 without being shouted down. It is however, precisely the job of the G.M.,Head coach and others being paid millions to do that.
I was most disappointed with Jerry Reese at this freak show. He is obviously just a yes man. Yes,it may be necessary to "keep" your job but,as a fan I am deeply disappointed. Mara should just shut the 'F' up and get the very best people possible. He needs to have people who can do that. If I was just a schmuck living and dying each week with this team it might be easier to pump myself up for 2010. This season wasn't just disappointing,it was an unbelievable display of inertia, bad judgement, and misplaced loyalties. Hell, Osi deserves better than Coughlin. He actually made a difference on a team that won the Super Bowl. Coughlin took a ride on Spags back. He is the SAME stubborn, reactionary, frozen person he always was. It's hard to fathom that a man who was such a disaster that he was about to be canned could orchestrate a slow death that we have had to endure. He is the same man. He got a gift that many more deserving never get. He got the ring. We got the shaft. Try and go back and think about all the coaches and coordinators that have been Tom's boys. Sheridan is NOT his first blunder at D.C and Gilbride is NOT his first blunder as O.C. The whole pile of do do just makes me sick. George Young,Bill Parcells,Ernie Accorsi? Tom Coughlin? are you serious?
