Why all the fuss about Cowher?
Written by Andy Furman

In Tuesday's blog, Mike L makes a very fair point about Bill Cowher.  Why all the fuss about a coach who blew a lot of big games?  It is a valid criticism.  Cowher is not perfect.  But here is a list of reasons why Cowher is great for your franchise:
1) HE IS A TOUGH COACH BUT A PLAYER'S COACH. It is not easy to do both. To be demanding and simultaneously have your players empty their tank for you.  You get that with Cowher.  You cannot put a price tag on that in the NFL.

2) HE IS ABLE TO DO MORE WITH LESS. Cowher's teams would get decimated by free agency and seemingly rebuild OVERNIGHT.  How? Because he took mediocre players and made them play well, took good players and made them very good and/or great. We saw plenty of his players leave the Steelers and then never regain the heights they had in Pittsburgh.  They played as a team and were always much better than the sum of their parts.

3) REESE + COWHER = Championship Contention.  The thinking is that with a good GM like Reese that is able to deliver the talent, that the combination would be really potent.

4) BONAFIDE QB + COWHER = Championship Contention.  Cowher did not have a bonafide QB until Roethlisberger, and then once he did, he went over the top.  O'Donnell, Stewart, Tomczak.  My goodness, he was the only coach who made Tommy Maddux into an NFL QB!  The Steelers went 15-1 with Big Ben as a rookie and 11-5 and Super Bowl in Y2. Not bad. With Eli Manning and Jerry Reese, Cowher is worth getting excited about.

5) HE'S 52 YEARS OLD.  There is clearly another run left in him.

6) NOT YOUR 40 POINT COACH.  How many times has Tom Coughlin's Giants teams given up 40 points in a single game?  We like to cite this metric because it is symbol of abdication by the head coach, that the team was simply not ready to play and did not belong on the field.  According to our statistics of the Giants back to 1966, it really should never happen more than once in a season, if that often.  For Cowher it happened 5 times in 15 years.  And it never happened more than once in a single season.  Juxtapose Coughlin- 9 times in 6 years, with the shiner this season.

One of my pet peeves is mocking the "grass is always greener in the neighbor's yard," implying that coveting what the competition has is usually a big mistake.  Bill Cowher is not God's gift to coaching.  He won't guarantee anything except a team that does not underachieve.  We have seen two successive seasons of underachievement here in NY.  My opinion, summarized by the 6 points above, is that Cowher knows how to get the most out of his players and that he will be able to put the franchise in a VERY GOOD POSITION to win another title with Eli Manning and Jerry Reese.

Sheridan got a job
written by psffur, January 20, 2010
Well,
Sheridan landed on his feet. He is not a coordinator but the Dolphins hired him as a defensive coach. I'm glad because he just wasn't ready for the job and he had to deal with Spags ghost. How about Chan Gaily in Buffalo? I mean, please. Chan is a nice guy but he has failed in college, failed in the pros and with several teams. I mean Wilson is either senile or on some heavy stuff. When he fired Jauron it made me think he was going to go all out while he is alive. Sure fooled me and I worry about Fewell if Gailey beat him out. Who knows?

What a sucky punch. If he would have tagged him good maybe we would not have to suffer with him.
There's a fine line between balls and stupidity

Rex Ryan said he'd be "shocked" if the Jets didn't win vs the Colts. The Giants may be out of this, but at least we are getting ringside seats to some pretty good entertainment.

I like Rex Ryan--to be honest I kinda wish some of our coaching staff had some "Rex" in them.

Anyways--you make valid points about Cowher. I'm not saying he isn't very good....and if he ended up as our HC at some point, I certainly wouldnt have a problem with it. It just bugs me that there is feeling amongst our fanbase that Cowher=guaranteed championships. I think Coughlin deserves AT LEAST next season. 2008? I still blame that on Burress. I truly believe if he doesnt have his incident--we at least get to the SB and play the Steelers. Yes....this 2009 season was a disaster. But even the best HC's have "down" seasons. Its obvious he badly misfired on the Sheridan hiring...a big mistake and the team paid for it. I think we are more then capable of rebounding with a big season in 2010. We have the offense--its all about Reese finding improvements via the draft and FA for our defense. LINEBACKER, LINEBACKER!! D-line help, maybe safety if Phillips isnt 100%...and more LINEBACKER!! If that is done, and Fewell turns out to be the right move and a good DC, I can easily see us winning 11-12+ games next year and being a SB contender again.

Coughlin deserves the chance to rebuild this again. We're only two years away from a championship...and I'm not ready to make him walk the plank yet.
Give TC another chance ?
written by Bob, January 20, 2010
I believe TC has had too many chances. 2009 wasn't an off year, it was a disaster. We started off loaded with talent after a solid 2008, and literally fell apart. TC clearly lost the team at season end. Why will he regain control & credibility next year ?
As far as 2008, we started off like a house on fire
and collapsed year end. The excuse given was Burress. Lousy excuse, unacceptable. TC & Gillbrown were incapable of making adjustments year end 2008 & put the O back on track. We beat both of the SB teams in 2008 and ran over a very tough Ravens D .
We had a great team & TC couldn't put it all together in 2008.

It all makes no difference, we're stuck with TC another year for whatever reason.

Gilbride
written by psffur, January 21, 2010
I'm just hoping that crazy Al Davis hires Gilbride. Nolan is an excellent DC. He would have been a good hire. He has Giants in his blood and he may have come here. I wonder if they even talked to him. I really think that a lot of guys want no part of Coughlin. He makes the game a tour of duty. I am still waiting for someone, anyone to say they really enjoyed playing for this guy.

So you wanna fire the guy two full seasons after he won a SB? So should I assume whoever you want as our next coach would also be fired if he doesnt win a championship in his first two seasons? As for 2008, I also forgot to mention that injuries also killed us down the stretch--our defense was worn down by playoff time. I dont blame the staff for anything that happened in 2008. 2009 yes--bad season. But coaches shouldnt get fired after one terrible season. Only TWO coaches we've ever had here have won us a championship...and TC is one of them. He deserves a chance to rebuild it back up from the awful 2009 season.

But hey its okay...lets fire TC right now and hire Bill "God" Cowher...who apparently is a diety to Giants fans for some reason, and who will guarantee 15 win seasons and multiple championship rings if we hire him. Hell...he's so good we may never lose another game ever again.

i hope we are all united that, since coughlin is our guy for the time being, we are hoping he can put this back together..he will be under extreme pressure to produce this year and if he cant then it is nice to know there may be options out there.....and if gilbride ends up being here again (which it appears he will unless he gets that oakland job), some of us may feel his coaching results in us using 4 of 8 cylinders on offense, but he will be our guy too..let's hope for the best......i really think the NFC East will be on the rise for the next two or three years, and if we don't make wise personnel decisions in the next few months, and spend money aggressively if we can to help put this D back together, we may be doomed to mediocrity...we have seen what good defense can do in the playoffs (cowboys shutting down eagles; vikings shutting down cowboys), and that is what we need to first be focused on....

I have to agree with irishmacmystic for the most part. We are who we are...and we are lead by who we are lead for the immediate future. Although most of us are unhappy with the direction of the franchise, this will be the critical year where we return to prominence or fall into oblivion.

I for one am very concerned about this "uncapped" year we most likely will face. Will we spend the money? We all know which franchises WILL INDEED spend the bucks to improve. I'm not so sure we will given the economy, PSL's...etc. It bears watching.
