Giants still need another safety
Written by Glenn Warciski

Even though Antrel Rolle is a member of the Giants, GM Jerry Reese will have to add another safety. The Giants depth chart at safety looks like this:  Antrel Rolle,  Kenny Phillips???,  and dreck.  Right now, we have a known, an unknown, and meager players at the safety position.  Rolle was signed because the Giants needed a veteran who can start and be productive in defensive coordinator Perry Fewell's new system. And Wonder stated,  "It tells me Phillips is a bigger question mark than before."  Speaking of Phillips, his injury situation is still unknown.  He may not play a down in 2010.  If Phillips cannot play, this leaves us with unreliable safeties Michael Johnson and C.C. Brown.  As a result of their poor play last year, the Giants can ill afford giving them much playing time in 2010.  Nevertheless, the Giants will bolster the safety position in the draft because of Fewell, the level of their competition, and Coughlin's job status.

In his defensive system, Fewell will implement the use of  interchangeable safeties.  According to the newly signed Rolle,

Rolle said defensive coordinator Perry Fewell suggested that will be the case with him and Phillips.

"I think that’s the way they’re going to look at us because, without a doubt, we’re both interchangeable safeties," Rolle said. "We’re both are very versatile, we can handle multiple positions and multiple tasks at hand. That will best benefit our secondary back there."

If Phillps does return, having three safeties with the same skill set is a plus. While Fewell was coaching in Buffalo, he had a similar good problem.   At one point last year,  Donte Whitner,  Jairus Byrd, and George Wilson all played together at the same time.  George Wilson exclaimed,  "It does wonders for us because we can disguise our man and zone pressures whenever we're blitzing," Wilson said. "Our safeties are so interchangeable that we can matchup with just about any skill guy that's out there and not feel like we're in a mismatch. That gives our coordinator great confidence to be able to dial up those pressures or man coverages and try to confuse the opposing offenses."

Despite finishing last season with an 8-8 record, the Giants face teams with high powered passing offenses in 2010.  They play six teams who were in the top 10 in passing yards.  Houston, Indianapolis, Dallas, Green Bay, Minnesota, and Philadelphia were all in the top ten.  With Dallas and Philadelphia being division opponents,  HALF of the Giants games will be played against top 10 teams in passing.  And they have five opponents who were in the top ten in passing plays greater than 25 yards. Philadelphia, Dallas, Green Bay, Minnesota, and Houston were all in the top ten in this category.  With Phillips possibly out, and if Antrel Rolle gets injured, the Giants need to add another safety in order to avoid a repeat of last year.

Consequently, Fewell was brought in by Coughlin to help fix this defense as well as stave off a possible termination. Fewell's strengths as a coach is improving a pass defense and he makes good in game adjustments.  Last year, the Giants pass defense foundered and former defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan had difficulty making the necessary in game adjustments.  Over the last two years, inexplicably, the entire team  especially the defense collapsed.  In 2008,  the organization characterized the late season slide "a wearing down of the defensive line". Last year, supposedly injuries is the primary reason for the teams demise.  By adding Rolle and a value and need safety with their first round pick,  let us hope Fewell is the man who can get this defense back on track.

Not to hijack this post but I was just wondering Why the BLEEP did we not put a tender on David Carr!? If we couldn't then I'm wrong, but it made no sense. Carr was a solid backup and will be the starting QB in San Francisco. Now we would have at least a 3rd round pick had we put a 3rd round tender on him. With all the teams in need of a veteran QB on their roster it made no sense for us to not get at least a 4th round pick for Carr by putting a tender on him. He's working a deal with San Fran but numerous other teams needed a veteran QB this year and it made no sense for us to not at least put a tender on him to get a late round draft pick!

From Ralph V's twitter account about tendering Carr:
No. Minimum would've been a "transition" tag -- avg. of Top 10 QB salaries. Don't know number, but it's more than he's worth.

i like the post andy, for me darrell stuckey or larry asante round 3 or 4.....stuckey would be my preference and we would probably have to move on him in round 3...i think he would be an excellent addition and would still allow us to look at other areas in round 1 and 2....the huge void now is at LB of course....

thanks gman 17. He for sure isnt worth 8-10 mil. I wasnt sure of the situation. As for safety Darrel Stuckey from kansas would be a huge pickup for us if we are lucky enough to get him in the 3rd. Chad Joness LSU has size and he's an LSU product so I like him but as you guys were saying we need LBers more than safety's.
Safety thoughts
written by Bukka, March 08, 2010
One of the side benefits of signing Antrel Rolle is that he has successfully made the position switch from corner to safety. Clearly he's a very intelligent guy with a high football IQ. His leadership should help the backup d-backs get better, particularly Bruce Johnson (a fellow Hurricane alum) and Aaron Ross, who got his feet wet at safety last year and should be the first man off the bench. If everybody's healthy (a huge IF) it looks like a strong group with great speed and coverage skills, decent ball skills, and sure tackling. My worry is that there is no heavy hitter in the group, and maybe that should be what the focus should be on for the draft. CC Brown was a disaster, yes, but he was very aggressive in run support and may have been the most physical d-back for the Giants in 2009 after Phillips went down. Perhaps that's why Reese tendered him. I think that if Taylor Mays is available in round two, Reese has to take him because he brings a new dimension to the strong safety spot. Of course, Al Davis will probably grab Mays early, which would be great because that would mean one less suitor for Mr. McClain.

One last thought: Antrel Rolle brings some Hurricane swagger to the defense that has been lacking since Strahan left. Shockey had it, Armstead had it, Phillips was on the cusp before the knee. I am a big fan of very smart football players (which is why I'm high on McClain and Myron Rolle,) but without the wolfpack mentality, this defense won't improve fast.

seemed like a good kid. He gets labeled by some scouts as a 'diva' or 'locker room distraction', but to me he just came off as fiery and passionate--something i would like our future MLB to have.
Linebacker option
written by Craig, March 08, 2010
It may be a little extreme, but would you give up a 1st and 3rd for demeco ryans? i would!
craig--demeco ryans idea
written by irishmacmystic, March 08, 2010
i don't think you have a bad idea craig....the guy is only 27, all pro and a tackling machine...at a position we desperately need a veteran presence in...we would be hurting to fill other positions due to the loss of the number 3 (obviously ryans is worth the number 1) but if we trade up to get rolando mcclain we would have to give up something too.....would we come up with yet another megabuck package which is what it would take to steal him from houston?..is it realistic to expect that? probably not...should it be discussed as an option? absolutely...

looking back at last few drafts, a 1st and 3rd for us last 4 years. were Nicks, Beckum...Phillips, Manningham...Ross, Alford...Kiwi, Wilkenson. With the exception of Phillips and Manningham, I would trade any pair for Ryans.

With Rolle and Ryans how many holes need to be filled? another safety yea. Dansby would have been great, but Ryans in this defense would be amazing
