Here is my Q and A with Mike Burke of Birdsfan.com.
Philly comes off of a tough loss against the Falcons. A game they should have won. The Giants have a short week to prepare. Even though they defeated the Rams, the Giants looked nondescript on offense. And the Rams played sloppy. Too many turnovers and did not score touchdowns in the red zone. This game is at the Linc. The Eagles should win easy.
Eagles 45 Giants 10
UltimateNYGGlenn: Without a doubt, the Giants are limping into Philadelphia. Already, they have NINE players on IR. But if the Giants get blown out which I believe will happen, I do not want to hear Coughlin and Reese using the injury excuse. Yesterday on WFAN, Troy Aikman discussed the Giants with Mike Francesa. Aikman quoted Bill Parcells about injuries. "When you have significant injuries and if you are not careful you give players and coaches an excuse." "If you have an excuse SIX days out of the week, but on the SEVENTH day when you line up and play, all people care about when that game is done, is did you win or did you not."
New York Daily News' Ralph Vacchiano makes his prediction too.
Ralph Vacchiano: I haven’t liked the Giants’ matchup against the Eagles at all over the last few years. I think their team speed and mobile quarterback make them an impossible task for the Giants’ defense. I like the matchup even less when I think about how the Giants’ secondary has played and how beat up the Giants’ offense is. I envision the Eagles scoring a lot in this game. The way the Giants’ play, in their soft, read-and-react zone more often than they should, they’ll give way too much of a cushion to the Eagles’ speedy receivers. It’ll be even worse if Vick is on his game and scrambles around, making Maclin and Jackson (and TE Brent Celek … and WR Steve Smith … and RB LeSean McCoy) even tougher to cover. There will be plenty of big plays for the Eagles’ passing attack. And when the Giants figure out how to contain that, the Eagles can hit them with McCoy, who has been very effective in the first two games. … Meanwhile, without Manningham and a viable third receiver, how are the Giants going to keep up? Hakeem Nicks may see triple coverage. Yes, the Giants will get TE Travis Beckum back, but is he really the savior of this depleted offense? Their best hope will be to run on the Eagles – something they definitely should be able to do. They should run. They should run a lot. And they should run even when it seems obvious that they should pass. That’ll control the clock, move the ball, and keep the Eagles’ weapons off the field. If they do that, my opinion changes. But I’ll believe it when I see it. They’re working against muscle memory with offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, who always says he wants to run, but always abandons it as soon as he can. The Giants will get behind and that will knock them out of their run-first intentions, and that will be disastrous. I hate picking blowouts in NFC East games, because these division battles have a way of always being close, and always somehow coming down to the final minutes. But as I look objectively at this matchup and the Eagles’ arsenal and the depleted state of the Giants, I just don’t see how that’ll happen this time.
Final Score: Eagles 38, Giants 20
We have a new user friendly comment system. Please discuss your thoughts about the Eagles vs Giants game.
Lets just enjoy the game, Hopefully the Giants can snap, the Dream Team six game win streak. The real keys are Will Eli have a super game and can we get that running game going.and keep the eagle offense off the field.
Final Score Giants 34 Eagles 31
The giants DL vs the eagles OL is the one matchup the giants need to exploit. But as Glenn has reported in the past yr and a half, the eagles have enough familiarity with the giants strengths and SAME weaknesses (hint LBer) to adjust and use their RB and TE liberally. I really hate the eagles, but I've seen this movie 6 times before and it ends badly. I really hope I am wrong, my heart wants to see the eagles dispatched but my head says it isn't happening. If I wrote for this blog w my heart I could be replaced by a pair of pom poms. I write w my head and I believe the gmen do not have the talent (injuries,FO mismanagement) and coaches to win this game. Reid is a boob too but his advantage in playing against this team is that he knows us well enuf to play enuf chess to win. He was the one-eyed man who onside kicked when the blind Quinn and TC were without the hands team.
Speaking of blind giants coaches, the giants offense needs to play small ball and pick on the LBers too. Sound familiar? Gilbride needs to cal six screens today but he'll call two and think he's a freaking genius.
Even though I write for the Eagles, I see and feel The Mayor's point... you still have to line 'em up and play the game... Anything can happen in this one... and if you look it up, the Eagles had a lousy record at home last season...I see a lot of upside possibilities for the Giants to take over this match...We'll know soon enough... let's just enjoy the game and let it play out... I'm just happy we all have NFL football in New York and Philly and across the USA this fine September day... Good luck to us all...
Giants can win this game with vick in they will blitz more and hopefully knock vick out for good. Divisional rivalry and the eagles aren't as good as everyone in the northeast thinks. They're beatable young o line, bad lbers . If we get up in Ron Mexico's a$$ all game we can and will win we also need to run the ball. Besides manningham has sucked this year anyway.
Sometimes trying to call a game is alchemy at best, disingenuous at worst.
What is the point? Tomorrow's game is one you just wish was over. It is a game in which on paper the Giants have no chance,no players,no game plan to beat one of the NFL's top tier.
The Eagles built this team while the Giants amazingly "fiddled" while becoming mediocre at best, irrelevant at worst.
As a lifelong Giant fan I feel as I did during the "dark " days. While so many celebrate one miraculous year they forget how bad the Giants had become only one year before.
Tom Coughlin and the "pretenders" capitalized on the genius of "Spags" as a defensive coordinator and "Spags" got to be a head coach but,it should have been in N.Y. Payton,"Hoodie",Fox,Garrett, were all coaches in the "Apple" and "Hoodie,"Spags" and Payton have gone "gold" Garrett is too new to evaluate but the Giants had him as a backup Quarterback for years incapable of using his talents which "Jones" jumped at.
I will watch until the story is told b@ut it will be tough and more a chore than fun!
Wow, Glenn quite cynical these days. Don't hold it against you though... the injuries and incompetent coordinators could do that to the best of us. This will be a TOUGH one for our gmen. I think that 45-10, while possible, is a little farfetched. I agree with the above comment that if it's really that out of hand they'll get something more in garbage time.
But my actual prediction is for the game to be competitive for awhile, we may even lead at some point. But a couple big plays or a couple big mistakes will cook us. 34-20 Eagles. Hope I'm wrong!
As has been said... HATE the Eagles! Our shot here is to keep the heat on Vick all day long, and get a dominant running game going.
The Eagles are coming off a painful loss to Atlanta & badly need to rebound.
The NYG were handed an easy win by the Rams.
The Eagles have the " Dream Team " for 2011, including Steve Smith, who caught
two passes last week vs. Atl. ( nice work, J,R. )
The NYG have too many key players injured, but carry the " painful
embarasment " from the 2010 game on their shoulders.
Conventional wisdom says this could be UGLY for NYG fans if Vick plays.
Seems like our only hope is to crush Vick with the D line, & knock him out of the game.. Plus play tough press coverage and knock Maclin & Desaun Jackson on their butts. Ross CAN do that.
Fewell put together a good game plan to contain Vick for the last game & it
did work for 3 Quarters. Can Fewell do better this time ?
Ralph Vacchiano: "I think their team speed and mobile quarterback make them an impossible task for the Giants’ defense."
I've been harping on this the last few weeks - the giants are slow and are not adapting to the new offenses in the NFL. Creativity is called for - so we won't see it. I would like to explore the idea of using safeties at the LB positions - at least 2 - in order to improve the overall speed of the defense.
Yes, we need to run. But can we ?
I mean our OL hasn't been oppening holes for our RBs this season. As you said, we'll play with one "real" WR who will be facing the best group of CB in the league. This would obviously help the Eagles defend the pass.
Yet they faced Bradford and his low end receivers and gave up many yards on the ground, so there's still hope that we can run.
If we can control the clock and avoid TO, maybe we can do something.
If we get behind on the scoreboard though ... it'll be over. With their pass rush, their secondary, our OL and our receivers, we are not throwing against the Eagles.
Let's not forget special teams, they'll need to be big mistake free if we want to compete.
I say we can put a TD in garbage time.
Eagles 42 - 17 Giants.
While I see this game being a repeat of the the Packers game I hope you are right. I freaking hate the eagles. My one hope is that Rogers is light years better than Vic and he can be knocked out of a game easily.@the mayor
Me too @UltimateNYGGlenn
G men have a legitimate shot the eagles are spotty on defense as well with vick in hopefully we blitz the snot out of him and knock him out! Divisional rivalries can go either way. If we blitz non stop and run the ball we will win. With some optimism I say we win 31-23.
@CommanderShepard with MM out. I do not think the Giants will be able to move the ball. Besides Nicks, the Giants do not have a reliable receiver. At some point Gilbride, will abandon the run. Expect Trent Cole to have a big game. He always gives the Giants fits. Beatty will have his hands full.
@UltimateNYGGlenn I hear ya Glenn. And this is very possible. I think we'll get some plays out of the committee of Beckum, Cruz, stokley, Thomas, etc. But yeah as I predicted, I doubt it'll be enough to win.
