UlitmateNYG's resident football savant, Wonder, goes around the NFL with snapshots on all 32 teams. He does not have flattering things to say about the NY Giants.
NE- Either Belichick is the greatest coach in the world, or the Pats are the luckiest in the world.
BUF- Bright future, but injury to EJ Manuel sets them back until 2014.
NYJ- How can any team that has been outscored by 68 pts actually have more wins than losses?!
MIA- A franchise with no direction and no control.
PIT- With Pouncey hurt, not one single OLman. They have Timmons, Woodley and rookie JJones, that's it.
BAL- How can anyone pay Joe Flacco $55M guaranteed?
CLE- If they can get a QB in 2014 draft/FA, 2nd WR opposite Josh Gordon, then solid solid team.
CIN- If Marvin Lewis does not win his FIRST playoff game in 2013 CIN should pay Cowher $10M to coach them in '14. Loss of Atkins huge.
IND- Another unbelievably overrated team, beat 3 best teams in football yet can lose to anyone anywhere anytime. Easily could be 2-6.
HOU- Schaub and Kubiak need to move out.
TEN- Do not sleep on the Titans. Close. Very close. Need more development and better play from Locker. Like the coach, team, everything about them.
JAX- I would take the 0-16 Lions and lay 7 pts vs the Jags on a neutral field.
KC- The worst 9-0 team in the history of Football. Going nowhere in 2013. I like them but they haven't beaten ANYBODY. Will lose at least 3 of last 7.
DEN- Elway should be the destructive exec of year for not knowing how to use fax machine (Dumervil voided contract). DEN would have walked into the Super Bowl if not for loss of Ryan Clady.
OAK- Al Davis has recently asked for his grave to be moved to Oakland Stadium so that he can advise the team.
SD- If you have 1st and goal down by 3 at the 1 yd, and don't try to win the game, u deserve to lose in OT. (Could easily be 7-1, my pick for wild card. KC DEN NE CIN IND are already the other 5.)
NYG- Beat MIN and PHL, now what?! No talent, no depth, no drafting. Jerry Reese go far far away. P.S. LBer is a position in the NFL.
DAL- As long as Jerry is Pres/GM, they will not win a Super Bowl.
WAS- What have they done to RGIII?
PHL- Not sold on Foles... Vick cannot stay (healthy) on the field.
GB- Seneca Wallace? Ya gotta be kiddin' me!
CHI- Some days chicken, some days feathers.
MIN- My heart goes out to AP.
DET- Some days feathers, some days chicken.
NO- Better make sure you are at home for the playoffs, gentlemen.
ATL- No White, No Jones, No Jackson, No love.
TB- All you need to know about team climate is that Revis would rather have $16M w 0-8 Schianos than $12M with contending Jets.
CAR- Tough Defense + Cam Newton not doing anything stupid = Victories. Brutal stretch schedule though.
SEA- Am I the only guy who doesn't think Russell Wilson is that good?
SF- Still my choice to go all the way.
AZ- Too bad they can't have Kurt Warner. Love my guy Washington.
STL- Good defense but their offense pathetic.
Wonder gives Giants a more detailed review: The Giants can lose to anybody at any time. No sacks. Giants fans are insane, should root for them to lose every game for a better draft choice. Dallas is going to win the division. Giants would need to beat WAS both games to win the division. Even with Seneca Wallace the Giants may still lose to GB. This team has the worst offensive line in football. Pugh is getting better. I had high hopes for Beatty when he came into the league, but he gets beat and he racks up penalties. They just don't have anybody.
Wonder's 5 worst Offensive Lines in the NFL are:
28) Miami (now that Incognito and Martin are gone)
32) NY Giants
The Giants could win the next 2 games but they would still be terrible. No quality at LB or OL.
I have been coming to this site and enjoying it's content for years I do have a few gripes with this post.
Last year, 'Wonder''s snapshot was spot on in a few ways. He mentioned Baltimore and San Fran as two of the best teams, and even mentioned Baltimore as a possibility to go to the Superbowl.
I point this out so that my comment does not seem in jest. Seemingly, he is a smart football fan (even though he also roots for the Jets).
My gripe is that you guys refer to him as 'Wonder' and label him a 'savant'. He may well be, but I do not recall ever reading any of his qualifications. It would be helpful IMO, if we knew who this person was, what his background is in scouting/football etc. Apologies if I missed that post.
This comment is mostly a reaction to his claim that Giants fans should root for losses to get a better draft pick. This is plain wrong on a few levels-
First, a fan 'rooting' for their team to lose is not exactly 'rooting' and is an oxymoron of being a fan.
Secondly, it is NOT good for the long term success of a team. Not only does success lead to more success (how many franchises have been pitiful year in and year out and cannot dig themselves out of the ditch because they can't attract free agents or good coaches, they can't attract fans, and their team identity and confidence is lacking).
Third (and perhaps the biggest head-scratcher), improved draft position guarantees very little. One of the best pieces this site has ever produced was 'The Draft Project'. This has been taking place after 'Wonder' came on board in late-2008. Perhaps I am missing something, but one of the things I have taken away from the project is that the value of a high draft choice is highly overrated.
Keep in mind- I only really comment when I have a gripe, so I am not trying to belittle the good work that is done here, and the excellent analysis 'Wonder' often provides. However, when I read things like "Giants fans are insane, should root for them to lose every game for a better draft choice", and "any opportunity to get rid of Tom and Killdrive is worth a lost season (moderator [above])" it makes me think that the contributions are coming from the run-of-the-mill uninformed fanatic, and not the well-imformed, insightful contributors I have come to know here at the site.
Geez. I can't agree with the sheer severity of the Giants assessment. "No talent"? None at all? Does he really think Dallas is a signifacantly better team? Almost sounds like a Dan Graziano piece ("Giants are just horrible, but Dallas could be good if they just "learned how to win" and Jones not GM". Yes we spotted them 2.5 game lead, but...
Telling us to root for losses for a better draft pick (with a straight face?) is insulting imo, and I hate it when Giants fans here say the same.
@ultimatenyg I still find this notion absolutely outrageous. Well we don't need to retread this; the same points that would come up now were already brougnt up in the comments here: http://www.ultimatenyg.com/2013-articles/january/conference-championship-day.html
@Pataroons @CommanderShepard As soon as I transcribed Wonder's remarks, I knew there would be a negative response to his call for the best draft pick. But I posted it anyway to get the debate out there. Everyone, including Wonder, want to see the Giants do well. I think you have to fight each week to get better and build for next year if there is nothing left this year. Let's remember, we ALL are crazed Giants fans... I mean who else would be doing this at 2-6? So do not misunderstand the passion. Maybe Wonder's word about being "insane" is not appropriate, but he said it and I did not bleach it.
Yes, Capt George is correct, if I had a very high pick I'd trade down.
I appreciate your support of the team and the blog.
Please read Wonder's bio. That has been his nickname since he was very young. His qualifications? Well, he has watched more film and more football than most of us and has a keen eye for subtleties that I cannot begin to describe. One of my favorites that I have mentioned before on this site is that he will watch NFL Combine film and carefully examine how the hips of a Cornerback move to determine the potential as a Pro. Unfortunately I have not had the time to grade out his first draft from 3+ years ago. But to use the strobe, he did not want to take JPP in Round 1 because there was not enough data on him (too few games in Div 1 in college), so who did he like instead at that spot in the draft? A Safety named Earl Thomas. Thomas was taken one spot before the Giants selected. He had Thomas a "1" and right now he is being considered in talk for NFL Defensive Player of the Year, not bad for his 4th year in the Pros. http://espn.go.com/blog/seattle-seahawks/post/_/id/1616/everyone-talking-about-thomas He's not perfect, liked Nicks but liked Britt more for the upside. But he nailed Vontaze Burfict and Daryl Washington, drug suspension excepted.
@Pataroons There is no right or wrong way in how you root for your team. I will never ever ever boo the team when I am at a game. There are lots of others that obviously do not agree with that. Are they right and I wrong?
As for the high draft choice. I would guess that Andy's response to what you said above would be that you take the high draft choice and trade down for more draft choices.
To clarify my own feelings about a lost season, in my mind it is already a lost season. Therefore. I would like to take this lost season and at least get something out of it besides a bunch of draft choices. Even if we did happen to win the division we are not going anyplace in the playoffs and just making the playoffs is not a victory in my mind.
@CommanderShepard Sorry commander, I can't agree. Wonder is spot on. I hate homer sites and writers. He is just calling them like he sees'em. I don't want suger, that's not why I come here.
I used to feel the same way you did about never hoping for a losing season to get a draft pick but for me, the any opportunity to get rid of Tom and Killdrive is worth a lost season.
As much as I hate the girls with every fiber in my body, they are, talent wise, a very good team and have been for years. They remind me of the lakers before Phil Jackson got there. Great talent but could not work together without a strong coach and they do not have that.
One of my issues when I hear people clamoring for a high draft choice- Yes, a top 5 pick would be nice. But if they don't have a top pick, it's not like they don't have ANY pick. A lot of good players can be had at, say, pick 10 (around where the Giants currently stand). In any event, the joy I am getting from watching the Giants work their tails off, despite the poor start, it far outweighs the joy I would have by having a top draft choice. It's a loooong season, but it's not lost and I am grateful that I at least have something to root for and enjoy. I'm sure you agree.
@capt george @Pataroons I know we can't live off past exploits, but your last sentence is hard to take seriously after we were dead and buried weeks 14/15 in 2011. There's NEVER a guarantee anymore that a playoff team can't get anywhere. There are numerous examples. The 2008 Cardinals spring to mind first (aside from our 2007 and 2011 teams). Hell, the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks won a playoff game a few years back.
I know Andy (and especially Pete... where's he been) would answer that by saying the league is "slop" these days as if the pre-salary cap era was some kind of glory day period that was somehow much better for football than what we have now. And as I did after 2011, I'd still now disagree vehemently with that way of looking at things.
@capt george @CommanderShepard Agree to disagree is fine with me. The Dallas D is putrid, and Romo is Romo (for better or for worse). Dez is a head case. Austin and Murray can't stay healthy. Witten's best days are behind him. I don't think they're some kind of beast waiting to be unleashed...
I'll be at the game Sunday, and will NOT be rooting for a loss. :D
As for your examples of never say never, none of those teams won it all and like I said previously, I am willing to trade this season to once and for all be rid of Tom and Killdrive.
@CommanderShepard I beg to differ. This is not the same team as 2011. The 2011 team had the talent to win, they were just poorly coached. It took antrel rolle and those guys from afterburner to get this team playing to it's potential, not the coaching staff. This years team has no chance to win anything. If you can't give Eli time to throw and you can't open holes for the backs, you can't score. The Defense is not good enough to overcome a bad O.
